Councilman Doug Gilliland notes the youth center spends about 12000 dollars yearly and serves eight youths daily, while the Andrews Boys Club also budgets 12000 dollars but serves 45 to 50 boys daily. He urges a competent study to assess the programs and staffing.
Doug Meador comments on women’s formal dress sparking confusion in marriages. He suggests husbands may hesitate deciding whether to call a cab or send one away after evenings out.
A city lake dirt hill has become the summer key attraction drawing numerous youngsters and adults. Scooters are seen riding up its slopes as the community debates future park plans like Bennett-Barnes in Southwest Andrews and the value of public spending on amenities.
Deadline today for cotton planting under normal weather to earn government price support. If drought prevents planting, farmers should visit the ASC office to file for price support with credit history and designate the area for cotton. Designated land cannot be replanted to other price supported crops.
West of the Pecos Trail Riders depart Andrews on June 27 for the annual trek to the West of the Pecos Rodeo starting July 1. They assemble June 26 with Ambassadors serving coffee at the Posse Barn before leaving for 3 Bar Kermit Pyote and Pecos arriving June 30 for opening parade events. Jaycee of the Year was Del Cordova at the installation banquet at the Country Club. Other top honors went to Tommy Williams for the Quarterman award and Myrl Duncan for the Keyman award. Williams and Duncan also earned road runner awards. April Jaycee of the month is Jessie Garcia and May’s is Kent Smith. Mary Carpenter received a certificate of appreciation from Andrews County News. New officers include Bob Howard as president, Duncan as vice president, Coker Lasiter as secretary treasurer, Williams as inter club director. New directors are Bob Hudgens, Jessie Garcia, Herb Bell, and Weldon Garrett. Lewis Driver, state director from Denver City, led the ceremonies. Jayceeette officers were installed by Mrs. J'nevelyn Melton of Odessa. The group was recently reorganized. W. A. Miller spoke as main speaker. See JAYCEES Page 4.
Odessa Ector's Johnny Gentry beats Andrews legend Ted Nelson in the open 100 yard dash with 9.5 seconds while Nelson posts 9.7. Gentry later withdraws from the 200, where Nelson wins in 21.7 as Andrews, Odessa, Monahans and San Angelo teams compete across senior and intermediate divisions.
The Civic Committee of the Chamber of Commerce leads a town wide Clean-Up Paint-Up Fix-Up drive in Andrews with county city support. Evans Holland chairs the project, Martin Epps heads the committee, and officials urge residents to place trash in alleys for pickup and label valuable items for salvage. Local salvage dealers will assist with old cars.
Andrews doctors urged Permian General Hospital Board and Andrews County Commissioners to build a county owned clinic on hospital property with a ten year lease. The plan, to develop a medical center, was tabled for more study as officials await the legality ruling from the Texas Attorney General.
Delegates from 20 counties attended the District 2 Annual Meeting of the American Cancer Society at Andrews High School. District Directors Bill Rice, Tracy Cockrell, and Dr. David Smiley presided as officers and chairmen led sessions on responsibilities.
Today is the day for blood donors at Permian General Hospital. Donors may donate between 9 a.m. and 5 30 p.m. Those with blood usage insurance can renew policies or obtain new ones through BSY Insurance. Donors aged 18 to 59, weighed at least 110 pounds, may participate with parental consent for 18 to 21 year olds.
Mrs Glora Dee Helm and her children, daughter of Mr and Mrs Sam Smith of Andrews, arrived in the United States after being flown out of Tripoli with other American wives and children of oil workers. Her independent operator husband remained in the area. She was first flown to the Rome airbase and learned of her safety by a fellow traveler in New York. She visited her brother in Grand Prairie before heading to Andrews.
The hours for Friday’s session are altered. Brownies meet at the old high school at 8 am and will ride buses to Florey. All Girl Scouts will be picked up at noon Friday and there will be no noon meal.
The Andrews Boys' Club will hold a spaghetti supper at the Andrews Community Building Thursday June 22 from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Admission is 1.00 for adults and .50 for children. Menu includes spaghetti and meatballs cold slaw milk or tea ice cream and coffee. Tickets on sale now per Roy Fubin, chairman.
County Commissioners in regular session accepted bids for asphalt paving in Andrews County and for a motor grader. Turner Construction Company won paving at 17 866 50 while P W Wood, Thompson Construction, and Jones Brothers submitted higher bids. Tor Nor Equipment Company won the motor grader with trade in, beating West Texas Equipment at 23 500. Funds come from Road and Bridge, Precinct 2. The court also authorized Clerk James Craddock to Galveston for clerks conference in June 1916 and approved several temporary hires at 300 per month from Road and Bridge, Precinct 2. Edna Wilsee was noted in staffing.
