City Approves 1957 Budget After Equalization Hearing
The Commissioners Court approved a 1957 budget with a total valuation of 64.2 million dollars up nine million from last year. The levy is 1.54 per hundred, funds include courthouse expansion bonds, and about 75 people attended a county barbecue after the session led by County Judge Virgil Lasater.

A special council session approved a June 26 mayoral election to fill Herb Brown’s vacancy and created a city manager office. J. L. Horner from Carthage is hired at 7200 dollars yearly plus a 100 dollar monthly car allowance to run city operations and hire staff. The body also reviewed traffic signal needs, utility contracts, and a large 160 acre housing project on the city’s edge with a proposed extended sewer line and other development measures.

Waters of Houston completes No 1 Nola Fisher Grayburg discovery eight miles northwest of Andrews with a 1942 barrel 33 gravity oil and water cut after acid and fracture treatments. The Texas Company reports multiple wells cutting holes and swabbing oil, with Devonian and Mississippian pays being tested, including a 30 foot Guid oil fraction. A second pay target in Mr Williamson's No 111 University Northeast Andrews wildcat yields gas and oil cuts as project progresses below 12 209 feet. 250 Youngsters Sign For Swimming Program
Two hundred fifty youngsters signed up Monday for the summer recreation swimming program. The turnout split into eight classes by age and ability with one Junior lifesaving group, three intermediate, and four beginning groups. Four classes meet Monday and Wednesday, four meet Tuesday and Thursday.

Three Wrecks Reported Here
Three wrecks were reported to the Andrews Police Department during the week. On Friday June 8 at 209 NW Fire and Ave A Orville Wayne Is Sacs in a 1956 Buick and a 1951 Ford pickup driven by Jimmy Mack Stewart. Estimated damages $298 with no injuries. Monday June 11 a collision occurred at Front Broadway and 13 St. Lewis Lemme’s car collided with a pickup driven by Willie W Beck. Damages to the car about $60 with no injuries. On Wednesday around nine a.m. a westbound car driven by O Clifton Thompson collided with a southbound car driven by Vernon James on the Southeast by-pass. Thompson cited for running a stop sign and James’s car suffered about $80 damage while Thompson’s arm was injured about $50.
