Normandy Invasion Gliders Engage Despite Night Sky
An account recalls the dawn of D Day operations as S2nd Airborne Infantry gliders towed by C-47s edge toward Saint-Mere-Eglise. Despite early fog and rockets, dawn revealed beaches Norman, Omaha, Juno, Sword, Gold as troops landed. The plan unraveled slightly as crews cut loose early, landing amid hedgerows and rough terrain.

Born February 15 1901 in Breckenridge he lived in Odessa Midland No trees and Selegam Mo before moving to Andrews three years ago. He worked for Texaco 32 years and farmed since 1959. Survivors include wife Christen one sister Miss Della Souther of Graham and seven brothers Harris Roy Herman A T Louis and Donald of Graham.

Memorial Drag Race Marks Club Tribute in Plane Crash Losses
The Boys Club hosts the Memorial Drag Race on Sunday afternoon June 29 to honor four Boys Club directors and two Jaycees killed in a plane crash while en route to plan the first local drag race. Organizers, led by Pete Hooper, say funds will support the club and the drag racing effort.

Two Fires and Three Wrecks End Week of Activity
Area lawmen faced two fires and three wrecks over Thursday and Friday. A stolen Odessa car left near the county line was found damaged but intact, with a patrolman noting the vehicle was not wrecked in the traditional sense. Fires included a heater theater blaze near Armstrong Central Lease and a water tank lid fire near oil in the South Fullerton field, both in oil country and quickly extinguished. In-town wrecks occurred Friday and Thursday, including a 1967 car collision on North Main and Avenue G injuring no one seriously. the driver, Betty McIntyre, received a citation for following too closely.

Andrews special education students attended the second annual state Olympics at Baylor University. Jimmy Carnett competed in 880 and 440 yard dashes, Charles Darnell reached intermediate finals in 440 and 220, Eura Dell Darnell posted the best girls time in the 50 dash and ran the 220 dash, Loretta Darnell reached the 50 dash finals, Orson Robinson and Burnette Johnson advanced to semi finals, with broad jump in competition. Teachers Sam Hooper and Dorothy McDavid led the group. Nancy Morgan and Tommy Turnage also attended. Finalists advance to regional in Oklahoma City and nationals in Chicago.

City Sprayer Set for First Run After Repairs
The city operated spraying machine will make its initial run Friday in baseball and Little League park areas after repairs. Officials said the sprayer, slowed by earlier repairs last summer, should now be in full operation.
Summer School Enrollment Grows At Local High School
Summer school registrations top 300 as classes begin Monday at the high school. Regular courses account for 110 students while about 220 enroll in two sessions of driver education and 27 more take homemaking summer courses.
City Offers Swim Lessons This Summer at Municipal Pool
Pool director Jan Pearcy announced three summer sessions at the municipal pool. Sessions run June 16 to July 3, July 7 to 25, and July 28 to August 15 with a $3.50 fee per session. Open to ages five and up, registration begins June 9 during regular pool hours. Instructors include Dennis Flam Debbie Hutcheson and Nancy Luck. Courses in junior and senior lifesaving are planned.
