February big day in Andrews voters decide road bonds and tax issues while noting past turnout. Play Heidi at the High School auditorium marks fund for a county library. Claude Neeley of Lovington New Mexico and former cashier of First State Bank of Seagraves has accepted the cashiership of First State Bank of Andrews and will take over here after winding up affairs at Lovington. He brings many years of banking experience and comes highly recommended.
Two cars were damaged and occupants suffered minor injuries after a collision one mile south of Andrews on Highway 51. A Ford driven by Leslie Kutin skidded on ice and struck a Chevrolet driven by Roy Lee Turner. No serious injuries were reported.
The New Andrews Telephone directory will be printed within two weeks, Manager Carl P. Ellis announced. It lists over 600 numbers including FHA Addition and various residence and business lines in a 16 page edition. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Caudle and daughter Rosie of Oil Center New Mexico visited Andrews Tuesday.
Public notice of a February 21 1948 election in Andrews County Texas to issue 290000 bonds for road construction maintenance and operation of sixteen miles on the Dollarhide Road with a 3 percent max interest and ad valorem tax to fund interest and redemption provisions. Voters must choose_FOR or_AGAINST the bond issuance and tax. Polling places and officers listed.
Big Spring won both basketball games here Wednesday night with the B team beating the Colts 36 to 5 and the first team defeating the Mustangs 30 to 26. The Mustangs will meet the same team at the Odessa tournament Friday night. Also notes include election details in Andrews County Texas with multiple precincts and officials listed. Tickets are now on sale for Heidi at the high school auditorium scheduled for January 24.
The Andrews Fire Department volunteers receive city furnished group insurance. It provides $2,000 for death or loss of eyes or limbs, hospital and doctor bills, and $25 weekly for injury time loss. The policy also pays a dollar for each drill when the department is called out.
Puritan Bakery will open a retail shop beside the Andrews Post Office offering brownies cream puffs cinnamon rolls cakes pies and cookies. Owner W W Harkness says the store opens Friday for public convenience and will not compete with local grocers.
Voters will decide on four road bond issues totaling 950000 to fund about 70 miles of pavement in Andrews County. Proposals include 260000 for 20 miles to the Dawson county line, 290000 for 16 miles into the Dollarhide oil field, 290000 for a route to the Eunice road and Fullerton line, and 112000 for 14 miles from Highway 51 to the Mabe camp. Bonds mature in 15 years at up to 3 percent interest.
The Children's Theatre of New York and Clare Tree Major stage version of Heidi will be performed at the high school auditorium on January 24 at 7 50 p m. Proceeds go to buy books to start a public library. Andrews Study Club sponsors the event.
Andrews Chapter of the American Red Cross will offer a ten session First Aid Course at the Junior High School starting Tuesday January 27 1948. Dr Hutchinson will instruct and adults may enroll. public school bus drivers and volunteer firemen are expected to sign up. Contact Mr H O Smith or Mr Lynn Miller for details.
Andrews County commissioners plan a trip to Austin for Monday and Tuesday to meet with the State Highway Commission about the Andrews Kermit highway and to discuss roads tied to a $950,000 bond issue. Participants include Judge Milton Ramsey and commissioners Carl Betenbough Melvin Price James Reed and D. C. Nix.
The tax assessor-collector’s office reports a supply of 1948 automobile license plates. Deputy assessor-collector Loma Smith says plates go on sale February 1 with a March 31 installation deadline. Previously March 1 was required, now Feb 1 onwards. Plates for passenger cars, trucks, farm trucks and trailers are black with orange numerals. Andrews County prefix letters remain unchanged.
The Andrews Lions club voted to sponsor a drive urging citizens to pay their poll tax before January 31. A two week page ad and viacards in public places will promote payment so voters can participate in upcoming elections and be eligible for the $950,000 road bond issue, trustee election, primary and general elections.
Gulf Oil Company is building six employee homes on their property just north of the Stanolind Camp after securing the land last fall. Details on final site plans and title issues were not disclosed.
The journalism class at the local high school under Mrs. J. Lee Smith will publish a page of school news. Mrs. Smith says the students have improved in writing and news gathering and deserve publication.
Mr and Mrs Clovis Bostick and Mr and Mrs J N Adams have moved into new homes in the Woolam FHA addition announced by contractor J A Umer. This brings total occupancy to 12 families in the addition.
The Andrews Lions club plans a Monday 7 30 p m event in the school cafeteria with the Lamesa Lions Band set to perform. Tickets are on sale and a large crowd is expected along with other features.
The Andrews Lions club voted at Tuesday's luncheon to sponsor a football banquet for the Andrews Mustangs soon. Knox Irwin proposed inviting a well known coach to attend and address the banquet. Details will be arranged by the entertainment committee.
Miss Helen Hearne of Seagraves is temporarily serving as cashier at the First State Bank of Andrews after the resignation of A. L. Hood until a permanent replacement is found. Hearne has prior experience with the Seagraves bank.
Phillips Petroleum No. 5 M University near Andrews reports Ellenburger flow at 75 barrels per hour in a drillstem test after reaching 10,350 to 10,980 feet with a 1,850 foot water blanket. Nearby wells by Humble, Texas Pacific, and Sinclair/Broader operators extend Ellenburger exploration in central and northwest Andrews County.
Lewis H. Cason of Andrews declares his race for County Commissioner in precinct 4, seeking Democratic Primary support. A World War II veteran, he promises full-time service, addressing local and county issues and meeting voters before the July primary.
Teachers from Andrews Gaines and Yoakum counties organized the Tri County Teachers Association in Seminole with Ted Edwards elected president and Clarice Douthitt named first vice president. About 175 teachers from Andrews Seminole Denver City Plains Allied Loup Seagraves join, as the group belongs to the West Texas Teachers Association which meets in Lubbock on April 12. The next meeting is set for April 1 in Andrews, and M Woolam is named as a delegate to state and regional conventions.
Deputy collector Loma Smith announced Thursday afternoon that 720 poll taxes had been paid by 1 p m. and 26 exemptions issued. She predicted the total would reach 1500 before the January 31 deadline.
