The Andrews News wraps 1947 and looks ahead to 1948. It praises two staffers for key local projects, predicts a prosperous year for Texas, and asks residents to beautify and develop the city with new trees, road work, and community efforts.
The G F Wacker store at Andrews nears completion and will be occupied February first. Wallace Morris of Seagraves will manage the new store. he currently works at the Seagraves Wacker store and is a native of Seagraves, a Seagraves High School graduate. His father Bill Morris served as business manager and tax collector and assessor for Prythe County Line Independent School District for many years.
Andrews county receives two hundred Chinese elms delivered and bedded south of the hospital. Trees measure 2 to 3 inches in diameter and will sell for about 1.75 dollars each. Judge Ramsey announced this first installment of several hundred trees ordered by the Commissioners Court for citizens to beautify premises.
Humble Oil and Refining will broadcast the Cotton Bowl from the Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas. Unde feated SMU faces undefeated Penn State as Kern Tips and Alec Chesser call the game for Texas Quality Network stations across Houston San Antonio Corpus Christi Amarillo Weslaco and Dallas stations WRR KRLD.
Enthusiastic support from Seminole and Sea Graves marked a Seminole High School meeting this week as Gaines County Country Club stock subscriptions reached 150 shares. Temporary chair Doyle O. McAdoo announced funds would be escrowed pending stock issuance and urged community chairmen to recruit additional members and associates in order of receipt. A marriage license was issued to Betty Jo Turner and Wallace Raymond Jones. Virg Brooks and family leave for Arizona for Christmas with Mr Brooks' father.
J E Hill Jr of Midland spent Saturday and Sunday in Andrews on local business.
Christmas mail rush hits Andrews post office with volume over six times normal as workers log 10 hour days. 17000 stamps sold in four days. letters and greetings jump from 1400 to 8000 daily during pre holiday week. Opened Sunday briefly to ease crowd and keep staff from being overwhelmed.
State Highway Engineer I C Greer urges holiday motorists to view wreckage at garages to visualize crash horrors and drive safely. He stresses observing No Passing Zones marked by double stripes and obeying stop signs to avoid accidents and insurance claims.
A son named Edgar Leon was born December 14 at Andrews Hospital to Mr and Mrs Marvin Henry McNett. Mr and Mrs David H Crump welcomed son Harold Vernon born December 17. Richard Thomas was named for a boy born December 14 to Mr A J Steinbeck. Daniel Martin was born December 18 to Mr and Mrs Martin Phillips. A baby daughter was born December 19 to Mr and Mrs R F E Fowler.
In Andrews County Magnolia Petroleum finishes No 6 DD B Cowden and reports deep pay between 9978 and 10003 feet yielding 681 barrels of 44.1 gravity oil with 20 hour flow through a 1 4 inch choke and 643 1 gas ration. A 9 887 to 9931 foot drillstem test flowed 90.6 barrels of 45.2 gravity oil in 9 1/2 hours after casing off. Humble Oil and Refining No 10 JK Parker near section 18 block A 41 county seat area produced 791 12 barrels of 43 gravity oil in 24 hours, via Ellenburger perforations. Sinclair Prairie No 2 173 Skelly University in Shafter Lake Devonian area drills below 9410 feet in lime and shale toward deeper depth. Gulf Oil No 1 QQ University in the same region has Ellenburger test to 11000 feet. Phillips Petroleum No 5 M Texas University digs lime below 9531 feet continuing.
Coach Francis Tubbs receives 160 in cash from Mustang fans and the Andrews community as thanks for guiding the Andrews Mustangs to a solid season. Three players earned All District honors as the team finished third in a tough district, with wins over Kermit Pecos Denver City and McCamey and losses to Seminole Wink and Monahans.
Sam Knolly, a well known Andrews county farmer and businessman who runs the Drillers Club in Andrews and owns several farms, is reported critically ill at Tombs Hospital in Semoe.
The newspaper notes a Santa letter contest winner sending a dollar bill to Sue Maxwell. Sue asks for a painting set, a pollyanna game, a weaving set, and Tinker Toys for herself and an electric stove and a kitten for her sister. She asks for candy and nuts for all the children and plans to go to bed early Christmas Eve.
The Andrews Mustang Quintets plan a January 1 and 2 return set with Merkel. Coach Payne notes Merkel’s senior squad defeated Andrews B team while the main Mustang five beat Merkel 38 to 24 and 52 to 33.
A Texas A M College report based on a survey with the US Bureau of Agricultural Economics finds only about 1 15 000 farm residents in Texas in January and July, far below the 1930 prewar level of 2 10 000. Veterans say lack of city conveniences, poor roads, no electricity, and unattractive farm living deter their return, with comments across Bell Brazos Victoria Walker Fayette Nueces counties.
Ferrel Nixon and Jack Young repeat on the mythical District 7A football team as coaches pick nine players for the all district eleven. Bob Wright earns a guard spot, and Andrews places three on the team including Nixon Wright and Young. The nine coaches conducted the poll for the Trans Pecos Football Officials Association with a banquet set to honor the players and an all district award to each. Val Joe Walker of Seminole received the only unanimous vote. Ends include Benny Rogers Wink and Richard Stanfield of Seminole.
College students returning for Christmas include Harry ertson Leon Jackson Nelson ess Helen Nichols from Hardin Simmons and Baylor with families and friends across Texas Tech West Texas State North Texas State and Sam Houston State institutions. The list features multiple named students and associated colleges and individuals in a community holiday roundup.
Funeral services for Weldon Bradley McCown 39 were held at the Church of Christ in Wingate with Marshall Davis officiating. Burial followed in Wingate Cemetery. McCown died Friday in Andrews of a heart attack after living in Andrews two and a half years. He had worked in oil fields and previously lived in Somerville County and Runnels County. Survivors include his widow two sons Weldon Jr and Jerry two daughters Cozette and Ray Sue his father O B McCown and brother E B McCown Abilene.
Andrews business houses posted double and triple increases in weekly sales led by toys such as footballs cap pistols toy cars and dolls. Other strong items included clothing belts boots purses and furniture related goods with steady tricycle demand and brisk final week purchases in candy turkey and sage for dressing.
Furniture dealers sold more table model radios, lamps, cookers, toasters, and mixers than cabinet radios mirrors and chairs. Record players also sold well, with strong runs on popular and western recordings.
