Farmers Grocery marks ten years serving Andrews with a Christmas sale from December 19 to 25. Established in 1937, it ranks among the area’s best equipped grocers. Mrs. Farmer, a former public school teacher, and her husband Mack built the business as Andrews grew.
Andrews County News sponsors the first ever 1948 baby recognition program. Local merchants contribute gifts for the basket to be presented to the first infant born after midnight December 31. Contributions must be listed by contacting the News office.
Twenty five fines were assessed this month against violators of the five year closed season on quail in Andrews county. Justice C. G. Weatherby reported Wednesday. The law, enacted in 1943, faces questions of fairness as violators from neighboring counties paid fines without awareness of the Andrews county restriction.
County offices will be closed from December 23 through December 29 to allow officials to visit relatives out of town. Judge Ramsey announced the temporary shutdown and said offices will reopen Monday morning December 29.
Poll taxes must be paid by January 31 1948 to be eligible to vote in the 1948 elections. Floyd Peacock Tax Assessor and Collector urged timely payment to avoid a last minute rush. Sheriff Peacock reiterated the deadline to the public.
The Andrews band will lead the town parade at 9 30 p m on Christmas Eve weather permitting Santa Claus will ride a fire truck delivering candy to boys and girls After the parade a Wallace Theatre movie begins at 10 00 featuring cartoons and shorts including Morrie Melodies Bugs Bunny Woody Woodpecker and The Three Stooges The Lions Club co sponsors the event with the theatre and Santa will meet children at the Wallace venue.
Mrs J R Rasco entertained the Woman's Sunday School class of the First Methodist church Tuesday evening in her home. Mrs Norman Brown led the class with Christmas carols as a miniature Santa and cedar circle decorated the table. Fifteen guests exchanged gifts from a special tree and were served chicken salad butter wafers olives fruit cake with whipped cream and coffee. Marshmallow favors accompanied the plates.
Mr. and Mrs. J P Jones will spend Christmas with Mrs. Jones's parents Mr. and Mrs. D L Cheek at Sundown.
Mr and Mrs B M Spencer of Los Angeles arrived by plane Friday for a brief visit with his brother and family Mr and Mrs C W Spencer. Mr Spencer is manager of Leverton and Company of Los Angeles.
Wallace Theatre presents a two night engagement Sunday and Monday December 21 and 22 featuring the nationally acclaimed film The Yearling with star performances and full audience appeal for the holiday week.
A Sunday evening program will be presented at Means Memorial Church at 7:30 in support of the Methodist Orphanage at Waco. Rev. Loyd Mayhew announces Christmas songs and carols directed by Miss Elizabeth Meachum. A white Christmas tree decorates the altar with cash offerings under it, and Rev. Mayhew will give a brief address on the orphanage's growth and conditions.
Mr. and Mrs. O. D. Huckabee of Brownfield bought the Fashion Shop from Mrs. Pat Beene. They will stock an exclusive Ladies Ready To Wear line and plan to buy stock in California in January. The Hucklebees, former Brownfield tailors and Brownfield graduates, invite Andrews residents to visit once ready.
Virgil Lasater, co owner, has purchased the remaining interest from Roy Decanouher and will run the City Grocery as manager and owner with his wife Ruby Lasater. He came to Andrews with the Humble move in, previously worked for Humble Company before starting his own business.
Mr. and Mrs. H. T. Wilson plan to attend a golden wedding celebration in Odessa on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Trolinder will mark their fiftieth wedding anniversary at the home of Mr. and Mrs. U. S Strickland, longtime friends of the Wilsons.
College students away at school will come home Saturday for the holiday season. Among those due are Ford Sealy David Moore Kenneth St. Clair Betty Ramsey Wesley Louise and Mr and Mrs James Roberts Charles Pinnell and Harry Robertson.
Jean Nix, a nursing student at Hendrick Memorial Hospital in Abilene, is expected to visit Mr and Mrs Hal Lonis during the holidays.
Former pastors of the First Baptist Church of Andrews attended the Sunday ground breaking ceremonies except Rev Roy Clayton. Attendees included Rev O C Curtis Perryton Rev E J Cobb Lockney and Rev A L Teaff Denver City. Sam M Smith and Bart Allison spoke. new church fund collection reached 1001.24 for the building fund.
Five members from the Andrews store staff attended the Seminole party at Mr. and Mrs. C V Singleton home. Twenty two employees from Andrews Morton Levelland and Sundown stores joined the event with Ola Davis T O Whatley and Neil Montgomery among Andrews residents. Guests played 42 and were served fruit cake and spiced tea.
Mrs Julius Fuhrman entertained the Sew and So Club with a Christmas gathering. Officers for the coming year were elected led by President Mrs L P Dixon and Vice President Mrs Julius Fuhrman. Members present included Mrs K E Norris and others. next meeting slated for January 7 with Mrs O A Flynn.
Ens. William H. Harris son of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Harris will arrive here Saturday for a holiday visit with them. Harris is stationed at San Diego California and is a member of the Navy Air Corps.
The Andrews Mustang quintets meet Merkel here Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. in the New Gymnasium. Coach Benson brings 12 players with both A and B teams against a tall Merkel squad led by Carr Land Nash and others. In a prior tuneup, Andrews beat Odessa 44 to 23 with Young leading scoring and Hamilton praised for defense.
Austin Texas State Fire Commissioner Marvin Hall urges holiday safety practices to prevent fires from decorations. He recommends flameproofing with a borax solution, using incombustible materials, avoiding cotton and paper, keeping decorations away from smoke, installing safe lighting, screening open fires, disposing of wrappings promptly, and removing drying leaves and berries as they brown.
A birthday party for Jimmy Strickland marked his sixteenth year, held Saturday evening at the home of his parents Mr and Mrs C B Strickland. Guests enjoyed games and refreshments including punch and coke.
Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Galloway will depart Wednesday to spend Christmas in Eastland.
R. R. Kennedy won a 6247 verdict against National Auto and Casualty Company after a three day trial. The jury, led by foreman K. L. Haught, deliberated Wednesday night and returned the award to Kennedy. Attorneys included James Little and Pat Beene for Kennedy, with Martelle McDonald and W. Schaffer for the defense.
The Andrews Post Office will open Sunday afternoon at 2 30 p m to hand out packages, announced by Postmaster Mrs Edgar Burkett. The Star route carrier is expected near 11 30 a m and packages should be ready by 2 30 to aid night workers. Mr and Mrs M E Spear and son Billy leave Friday for Phoenix to visit Melvin and family for Christmas.
Mr and Mrs Charles Haven host Olen Haven and his parents Mr and Mrs D H Haven who just returned from a three month vacation tour of Oregon and Washington Olen will reside with the Havens temporarily and attend Andrews high school
Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Louis anticipate twin sons Horace and Morris arriving from Hawthorne California for the holidays. Also seen rushing for gifts in Odessa Tuesday were Mr. and Mrs. Doris Braswell and several Burkett relatives along with Mrs. T. C. Anderson and Miss Norma Jean Burkett.
Miss Loma Smith, deputy district clerk in the sheriff’s office, departed last week to visit her parents in Arkansas.
