A Thursday noon fire damaged a water well drilling unit and caused a pickup to burn near a residence on Terrace Hills Northeast Andrews. The operator, Pe Watley, tried to fight the flames with a shovel while preparing to change a machine and knocked a valve, spreading the fire to the tank before firefighters arrived.
Permian Basin Pipeline Company of Omaha Nebraska asks the Federal Power Commission to authorize expanding its Andrews County plant. It proposes to buy a 1350 horsepower compressor unit and turbocharge six of twelve units, adding 4050 horsepower at an estimated cost of 565000 dollars. The expansion aims to handle more residue gas from Phillips Petroleum nearby as Phillips seeks to raise gas sales by 20 million cubic feet daily.
Chamber announces chairmen and members of committees for the coming year. Retail committee will be led by W. C Young with T. A Roach as merchants division chair. Industrial committee chaired by Dr. Neil Hayes aims to attract new industry, with members including R. J. Ream and Tom Hood. Building and housing committee led by John Stubbs plans remodeling of downtown storefronts. Civic planning committee, headed by Albert Sybesma, will tackle zoning and city charter with members such as Preston Grissom and Dr. James Casey. Park and recreation committee led by Willam F. Goode Jr seeks Andrews community park with Wayne Caraway and others. Membership committee chaired by L. B. Parrish includes Joe Weatherby and Jimmy Jones. Public relations chair Jack Fielden lists members O. B. Raburn and George Abee. Traffic committee, led by Floyd Peacock, pushes for safety. transport committee headed by Max Ramsey eyeing airline and rail service with partners C. A Norton and Pat McNair.
The Tuesday morning publication will replace Thursday next week to give News staff Christmas holidays. The issue will feature annual Christmas greetings from local firms and individuals. No edition will be published Sunday December 29.
The Goodfellows plan to pack and distribute food toys and clothing to over 60 families in Andrews this Christmas. Volunteers are invited to help Sunday afternoon in the county courthouse basement meeting room with distribution slated for Monday night led by the Jaycees. Donations, including clothing and nonperishable foods, are encouraged through Saturday morning.
An all cartoon and short subject program for youngsters is planned at 2 45 pm Friday by the Jaycees. Santa Claus will greet children and hand out candy. Admission is a can good donated to the Goodfellows for needy families. The two hour show begins shortly after school dismisses for Christmas holidays at 2 30 pm. Proceeds support Andrews Goodfellows fund for those in need.
Andrews built a 21 16 halftime edge then outscored Wink 27 10 in the final period to win 66 35 behind Roy Perrin 19 points and a 16 point burst in the last two quarters. Whitworth 13 McClure 12 and Sheperd 10 helped pace the Mustangs while Ronnie Brice and reserve Jimmy Rhaddell missed the night due to illness.
A woman riding with Joseph Clayton Guess of Odessa sustained minor cuts and bruises when his car lost control and overturned about five miles south of town Sunday night. He swerved to the shoulder to avoid an oncoming car.
Bruce Davis of Andrews High School earned a first place in the low bass division at regional tryouts in Kermit and was picked for the All-State Choir representing the Andrews Choir at the Texas Music Educators Convention in Galveston February 17 to 20.
Earl Cummins and Ralph Merritt filed to enter the race for the vacant city council seat created by Thad Ballew's departure. The winner will serve until April unless reelected. Cummins criticized the city’s two man rule and his firing from the police force as evidence of unfair hearings.
Robert C. Castile was granted a new trial by District Judge G C Olsen after a jury misconduct finding in a district court hearing. Castile, previously sentenced to two years in state prison for assault without malice in the Willie Williams shooting, had the charge reduced from assault with intent to murder.
Two Andrews youngsters were hurt in separate incidents this week. Randy Brewer, 17 months old, fractured a collar bone when he fell from a high chair Monday morning. He was treated at the local clinic and expected to join his family in Austin for the holidays. Steve Carroll, a third grader at Devonian Elementary School, sustained a leg laceration Monday after school when he cut his leg on a license plate of a parked car he was running past.
Readings show above normal highs most days with a brief cool front Tuesday and Wednesday. Four of seven days posted daytime highs in the 70s while early lows rose from 20 to 48 in a week long warming trend after last Thursday’s cold spell.
School holidays start 2:30 p m Friday for students teachers and administrators. Dismissal occurs Friday with classes resuming Monday Jan 6. Several class parties and special programs will be held Friday before dismissal.
