Fire damages water well drilling site near Terrace Hills

A Thursday noon fire damaged a water well drilling unit and caused a pickup to burn near a residence on Terrace Hills Northeast Andrews. The operator, Pe Watley, tried to fight the flames with a shovel while preparing to change a machine and knocked a valve, spreading the fire to the tank before firefighters arrived.

Permian Basin Pipeline seeks gas facility expansion near Andrews

Permian Basin Pipeline Company of Omaha Nebraska asks the Federal Power Commission to authorize expanding its Andrews County plant. It proposes to buy a 1350 horsepower compressor unit and turbocharge six of twelve units, adding 4050 horsepower at an estimated cost of 565000 dollars. The expansion aims to handle more residue gas from Phillips Petroleum nearby as Phillips seeks to raise gas sales by 20 million cubic feet daily.

Chamber Lists Job Chairmen

Chamber announces chairmen and members of committees for the coming year. Retail committee will be led by W. C Young with T. A Roach as merchants division chair. Industrial committee chaired by Dr. Neil Hayes aims to attract new industry, with members including R. J. Ream and Tom Hood. News to publish early for Christmas edition

The Tuesday morning publication will replace Thursday next week to give News staff Christmas holidays. The issue will feature annual Christmas greetings from local firms and individuals. No edition will be published Sunday December 29.

Goodfellows Set Distribution Date for Andrews Christmas Aid

The Goodfellows plan to pack and distribute food toys and clothing to over 60 families in Andrews this Christmas. Volunteers are invited to help Sunday afternoon in the county courthouse basement meeting room with distribution slated for Monday night led by the Jaycees. Donations, including clothing and nonperishable foods, are encouraged through Saturday morning.

Kid Show Slated Friday at Rose Theatre

An all cartoon and short subject program for youngsters is planned at 2 45 pm Friday by the Jaycees. Santa Claus will greet children and hand out candy. Admission is a can good donated to the Goodfellows for needy families. The two hour show begins shortly after school dismisses for Christmas holidays at 2 30 pm. Proceeds support Andrews Goodfellows fund for those in need.

Andrews Mustangs overpower Wink 66 35 on late surge

Andrews built a 21 16 halftime edge then outscored Wink 27 10 in the final period to win 66 35 behind Roy Perrin 19 points and a 16 point burst in the last two quarters. Whitworth 13 McClure 12 and Sheperd 10 helped pace the Mustangs while Ronnie Brice and reserve Jimmy Rhaddell missed the night due to illness.

One-Car Turnover Injures Woman Near Town

A woman riding with Joseph Clayton Guess of Odessa sustained minor cuts and bruises when his car lost control and overturned about five miles south of town Sunday night. He swerved to the shoulder to avoid an oncoming car.

Two Candidates File For Short Term City Council Vacancy

Two Youngsters Injured Monday In Separate Accidents

Two Andrews youngsters were hurt in separate incidents this week. Randy Brewer, 17 months old, fractured a collar bone when he fell from a high chair Monday morning. He was treated at the local clinic and expected to join his family in Austin for the holidays. Steve Carroll, a third grader at Devonian Elementary School, sustained a leg laceration Monday after school when he cut his leg on a license plate of a parked car he was running past.

Temperatures Stay Above Normal Across Area Last Week

Readings show above normal highs most days with a brief cool front Tuesday and Wednesday. Four of seven days posted daytime highs in the 70s while early lows rose from 20 to 48 in a week long warming trend after last Thursday’s cold spell.
