The AAA basketball tournament draws attention as Fort Stockton faces Lamesa in a 51 45 game watched by a small crowd. Andrews eyes a strong season with most starters returning and a rising junior varsity, while Lamesa and Fort Stockton set a high bar.
The high school choirs present their annual Christmas concert Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the old high school auditorium. Admission is 1 for adults and 50 cents for children. The A Cappella choir features I Wonder As I Wander with Barbara Maxie, All Glory on High with Jan Fisher, Mary's Boy Child with Ramsey Humphries, Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy, Do You Hear What I Hear, and a guitar number by Kent Smith. Chorale selections include God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Glad Tidings, and What Child Is This. The Mixed Choir will sing Jesus Was Born on His Day Psallite and Bring a Torch Jeannette Isabella.
The new Reddy Room at Texas Electric Service Co opens Friday with an all day open house. Lloyd Stoebner, manager, says the space will be available to local clubs and groups for meetings and invites the public to stop by during the day.
E. L. Short of Tohoka, elected last summer to finish Randy Pendleton’s unexpired term in the 73rd district House seat, announces seeking election for a full term. Short thanks voters for allowing service and asks continued support. wife Dink and daughter are mentioned.
James L. Bearden was appointed to a statewide committee by the State Board of Health. The local city and county health officer was named to serve on the State Sanitarian Advisory Committee as one of two new members for the coming year.
Vernis Burns, deputy district clerk, announces candidacy for Andrews County District Clerk subject to the May Democratic Primary. She notes long county residency since 1945, husband J. J. Burns a pump operator for Atlantic Richfield, and a daughter. Page 10.
City and county officials approve a final plan for ambulance service to Andrews Singleton under local government operation. The county covers 60 percent of costs with the city taking 40 percent and running the service through the police department. Louis Miller notes Singleton’s continued operation to avoid loss of service for residents.
The Andrews Chamber of Commerce named new committee heads for the year per incoming president Dr. Brian Gordon. Lloyd Stoebner leads the industrial committee and Johnny Smith the transportation committee for another year. Other appointees include Bert Smith conventions Lowell McGee administration Dr Z W Hutcheson health O B Raburn existing industry Rev Bob Zap civic and cultural affairs Charlie Ward governmental affairs Dick Garrison retail Fd Lilley program of work Thurman Carter membership Mary Carpenter public relations. Previously announced were Charlie Carruth petroleum head Gordon Cox Gerald McChlaskill agricultural Gene Pearson sports and Jerry Hotchkin beautification.
Andrews volunteer fire department was summoned to an oil unit fire on the Frankel City road in Gaines County around 5 19 p m Monday. Two minutes later, the fire call was cancelled as the blaze was under control.
County commissioners authorize Wayne Harrison as county engineer to draw plans and specs for extending the Andrews County airport runway to meet Federal Aviation Authority standards. In other action, Frank Williams is to attend a juvenile meet in Gatesville December 10 to 12. They transfer 1,437.43 from the 1953 permanent improvement sinking fund to the 1960 fund.
Mrs. Jose Gonzales and two passengers DeLisa and Renee Mihecuby were injured in a city wreck on West Broadway Friday. The patrolman cited Gonzales for failure to yield and no driver license after she turned in front of Terry Brackeen. All were admitted to Permian General with abdominal, leg, and head injuries reported. Vehicle damage was about $2,000.
Andrews High School's Mustangs beat Sweetwater 59 to 39 as Johnny Horton led with 19 points and Mark Pearson added 10. Randy Laminack scored 8, Crawford Williams and Rodney Lunceford 6, with Stanely Scott 5 Nat Hearne 3 and Gary Rogers 2. They head to Fort Stockton for tournament action against Ysleta Friday at 6 30 p.m.
Neil McDonald was elected as a Chamber of Commerce director to replace Dean Davis who is moving to Lubbock. The election occurred at a called board meeting on Tuesday morning at the chamber office. McDonald is employed by Texas Electric Company here.
Funeral services were held at Faith Lutheran Church for Mrs. Audeen M. Fehland 51 of 1005 SW 6th Street who died Monday night after a month long illness. Graveside rites followed at City of Levelland Cemetery with George Price Funeral Home in charge. She previously lived in Levelland Sundown and Jasper Minnesota. Survivors include her husband Helmer B and one son Eugene of Luray.
Sam Smith, longtime district clerk of the 70th and later 109th districts, announced he will not seek re election and will serve one more year. He began in the old courthouse and has been elected repeatedly since 1928, defeating numerous opponents in a decades long career. He and his wife have four children and eight grandchildren, and Smith is a World War I veteran active in veterans groups.
