Depletion Cut Discussed At Downtown Lions Club
At the noon meeting Downtown Lions Club heard John M. Shimer Jr. of Sun Oil discuss the impact of a 27 1/2 percent depletion allowance cut on Texas. He warned it would cause an economic upheaval for about one million residents and noted the industry funds 40 percent of Texas taxes. The talk was arranged by George B. Holman Jr. of the Texas Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association.

Short Wins Special Election in West Texas District 73
E L Short, longtime local businessman, won the 73rd Legislative District seat with 3 799 votes to 2 058 for Jim Clack in a multi county count. Short carried his home county and Dawson Gaines Martin Yoakum and Andrews counties while Andrews residents rejected constitutional amendments 3 4 6 and 9. The new representative will attend the ongoing Texas legislature special session in Austin.

Pete Smith resigns as head baseball coach at Andrews High School to accept the job of assistant dean of men at Stephen F. Austin State College in Nacogdoches. The official written resignation had not been tendered to the Andrews school office when the information was released by Smith’s wife. Superintendent E A Brenholtz confirmed the oral resignation and noted no written notice had been received yet.

Small World saga: wallet found by Marine mates in Vietnam
Lance Cpl. Robert V. Matthews of 704 NW 13th St. loses his billfold on a mine sweep July 16. On July 18 a fellow Marine in Company A, Hiram Hubert of Andrews, discovers the wallet with photos confirming Matthews as its owner. Officers grant a three hour visit for reunion. Matthews serves with 1st Battalion 4th Marine Regiment, 4th Division.

Roberts Wounded in Vietnam in July

Brinkleys Ford Wins First in Grand Ole Tour
R L Brinkley of 1201 NW 12th Place won first place in restoration for his 1931 Model A Ford deluxe roadster at the 7th Grand Ole Tour of the Antique Car Club of America in Lubbock. Sixty three cars, 1902 to 1941 models, competed in four regions over the weekend. Brinkley spent over two years restoring the car which he bought from a pumper in Iraan.
