Mr. and Mrs. Luther Akridge welcomed a son Jimmy Ray born July 30. Dr. and Mrs. Z W Hutcheson welcomed a daughter Deborah Sue born July 30. Kenneth Lynn Jr born to Mr. and Mrs K L Burns weighed 7 lbs 12 ozs. Mrs J L Cavitt dismissed Monday. Mrs T D Hamilton underwent surgery Monday and is doing nicely. Mrs S P Fohols underwent surgery Tuesday. Other patients include Dean Keyes and Mr Lee Grant. Mrs Charley Pippen of Big Lake dismissed Monday.
Knox Irwin of the Odessa draft board warns men to report any status changes such as marriage or address updates to avoid delinquency. State officials say delays can jeopardize Texas's 2,513 man September quota. The Odessa board directs inquiries to Charlie Burkett or Draft Board No. 37 in the Burke Building.
Jean's Grill formerly Texas Grill opens Monday with an open house. Free coffee and doughnuts will be served as the cafe is redecorated and upgraded. Mrs. Jean Rose of Odessa will manage the establishment and invites the public to inspect the new cafe.
County agent Hubert Martin reports crop prospects are the best in years with cotton maize and other feeds showing promise of a bumper crop. He notes worm and insect infestations but says farmers are controlling them with poisons amid recent rains causing extra expense. S. J. Hinkle notes grass is unusually fine.
Mrs Clemmie Kirby age 73 was laid to rest at Odessa cemetery after funeral services at the First Baptist Church in Andrews. The longtime Texas resident, born in 1877 in Hartselle Alabama, had lived with her niece in Andrews since July. She is survived by two sisters and two brothers, six step children and many relatives. Funeral honors included a solo by C D Hamilton and pallbearers from Fort Worth Odessa and Penwell.
National scare drives Andrews residents to buy up stock at Dry Goods stores. Shoppers report shortages of sheets tires sugar and nylons with limited purchases per person while managers recount dwindling supplies and reordered items.
Texas Department of Safety officer Dunn will be in Andrews every Monday, not every other Monday. The written driver license exam runs 9 to 10 a.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. The remaining time that day is set for the driving examination.
H S Tate was named county chairman of the Republican party in Andrews on Monday as Mohler D Temple, chair man of the 30th Senatorial District Committee, made the appointment. Tate urged Republican members in Andrews to identify themselves.
Multiple drilling plans in Southeast and Southwest Andrews County outline Stanolind Oil & Gas and Anderson Prichard Oil Corp's No 1 David Fasken No 3 A David Falken and other wells to 5000 feet. Projects include 660 feet from lines in sections 6 43 and 8 plus 1320 feet from lines in section 43 with rotary rigs. Fullerton and Humble also announce Ellenburger tests near Andrews with 12000 foot and 1000 foot depths respectively. Stanolind acquires half interest in about 21000 acres from Alderson Prichard. eight blocks to wildcat to ~5000 feet by March 21 1951.
Superintendent Thomas D. Hamilton announced season tickets for six home games at Hamilton Field. Six dollar tickets grant seating in the West stand center sections C D and E. Opening game is September 8 against Dalhart with a schedule listing Pecos Wing Crane Denver City Kermit Monahans Ft Stockton McCamey Seminole and an open date.
Mrs. Bessie Opal Barker of Andrews paid a $150 fine and cost totaling $188.40 in Coke county court for transporting liquor in a dry county. She was arrested Tuesday while driving a pickup truck loaded with beer in Robert Lee.
Residents head to the polls Saturday to decide if Andrews County will be wet for wine and beer sales. Precincts 1 to 4 vote in designated county offices and at the court house. Ballot instructions guide dry or wet choices for qualified voters.
A 1947 Nesbitt Bottling Works truck from Odessa overturned three miles south of Andrews, injuring the driver Ralph B Cobb and breaking the leg of Eugene Maples, stepson of the driver. Bed came loose. Deputy Sheriff John Suggs filed the report. Both victims were taken to Andrews Hospital. A nearby Borden Milk truck also overturned with its driver treated in Midland.
City Council designated twenty blocks for paving and curbing as a trial to estimate costs. Detailed data will track paving and curbing across blocks including NE 6th NE Avenue A and B NE 2nd to Main Street NW and SW streets Logsdon Avenue.
Mr and Mrs Ottie Holman returned this week from an extensive trip to North Carolina to their son Ottie Jr and family. Bobby Holman who accompanied them stayed over in North Carolina. Mr and Mrs Amos Vining and son Jackie left Tuesday for a week of fishing on the Concho. Mr and Mrs Boyd Stakes hosted his aunt from Midland. Mr and Mrs V R Brown hosted Brown s parents from Odessa.
Visiting in the Mabee Camp area this week includes Miss Angie Adams of Lorraine Texas with Mr. and Mrs. Nick Gandy. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ray of Lovington spent Friday and Saturday with Mr. and Mrs. C E Ray. Ralph Hise's visitors include T E Bankston and daughter from Ranger and C Hise of Abilene. G B Pilgrim and children visited relatives in Breckenridge Mineral Wells and Fort Worth. C E Ray visited daughter Mrs Oran Peden in Sundown. G S Clay of Hamlin visited the Ray and related families.
The Game, Fish and Oyster Commission plans an October 2 to 10 antelope season based on a west Pecos survey. Final permit numbers may be under 702 from 1948, with drawings to assign permits as applicants send in $5. Ranchers receive 20 percent of permits. hunts cover 30 to 35 ranches in nine counties with three day periods and a $40 per hunter three day fee.
Coaches Tubb and Taylor attend the Texas High School Coaches School in Austin this week as enrollment climbs past 1500. The highlight is a north versus south game at week's end. Bud Rollins of Wink is sidelined with a fractured vertebra, the lone 5-A invite. Andrews Mustangs fans await the season amid calls for a quarterback club meeting.
George Clay visited last weekend. Frank and Mary Roberts visited relatives in Colorado City Tuesday and Wednesday. Jack Erwin and son Ashley returned home in El Paso after visiting W. E. Erwin. Juana Ray McLaughlin visited Albuquerque. J. H. Massey family returned from a week touring New Mexico and Colorado and left again Tuesday for Breckenridge.
Rev. Raymond Van Zandt announces a revival at the Methodist Church with Rev. G W French preaching and J Villa Maclin directing singing. The event promises strong gospel messages and opportunities to join in singing and reflection led by local clergy and church members.
