Stonewall Jackson Outsmarted by a Persimmon Joke
A Philadelphia Ledger note recalls Stonewall Jackson showing rare milder humor during a 1862 forced march. After a private lies in wait atop a persimmon tree, Jackson quips about the fruit not being ripe, the soldier explaining he wants to draw innards to fit his rations. The tale ends with a line about cowardice and discretion.
