President Urges Free TV and Radio Maintenance
President Eisenhower urged the television and radio industries to keep media free in the truest sense during the National Association of Radio and Television Broadcasters convention. He called TV and radio a mighty force in civilization and urged norms of decency and good taste to guide industry planning, stressing broadcasters’ right to express proper opinion and access to news. He spoke before about 3,500 at the Sheraton Park Hotel, noting news columns belong to the public while editorials remain with the publisher.

GOP Senaters seek defeat of Eisenhower highway plan
In Washington Senate Republicans move to derail the administration road program, aiming to back Gore's alternative after failing to win passage. Gore proposes nearly 18 billion dollars in federal state spending over five years for interstate, primary, and urban road systems, with about 12.5 billion from federal shares. The plan contrasts with Eisenhower's 138 billion federal state funding over 16 years for the interstate network.
