Judge Halts Coal Mine Strike Order Enforces Law
Federal Judge Aubrey Robinson ordered UMW miners to return to work at 7 a.m. local time under the Taft-Hartley Act, suspending a four day strike that spurred power curtailments and thousands of layoffs as talks resume between the union and Bituminous Coal Operators Association. Carter defended the action saying it must be obeyed and urged cooling off to avoid national confrontation.

Housing proposal gets nod
Anderson City Council approved two measures enabling the Housing Authority to pursue Allen Chapel low income housing with HUD backing. The 7 to 2 vote reversed February’s denial, with Orbik and Van Dyke the dissenters. HUD reps warned the city and authority will not be financially able under the plan, which also seeks a HUD loan up to 12000 for engineering and design work.

Lanane Faces Question Over District 36 Candidacy
Dennis J. Lanane challenged election filing rules after a perceived announcement of his bid for the District 36 Democrat nomination. Records show he filed with the County Clerk, but state law requires filings with the Secretary of State. Official lists at Indianapolis omit Lanane, citing no late filing documents. Campbell and Miracle listed as Democrats by the Secretary of State, while Hersberger filed with both the county clerk and the secretary’s office.
