Administration seeks immediate back to work order in coal strike
The Carter administration will ask a Washington federal court today to issue a temporary back to work order against more than 1,000 United Mine Workers locals and coal companies. A presidential fact finding panel completed a one day hearing into the 13 day strike and prepared a report for the president before the Justice Department file the suit. Miners could be ordered back underground after safety checks, with a long 80 day injunction possible if challenged. Arnold Miller said miners may disobey the order. Negotiations for a national contract show little progress amid a weekend rejection by 160,000 miners.

Reed says the firm has been inactive but still pursued the city refuse contract bid, explaining it viewed the equipment company as the right vehicle for the job and noting some bids account for mileage, dumping fees, gasoline costs, and park collection.
