Duck Creek Township School Plan In Doubt After Higher Bid
Bids for a Duck Creek-Boone Township school addition exceed estimates, making the project doubtful. The $98,7 00 low bid surpasses the $91,000 estimate by about $8,727, though Duck Creek Trustee Mary Dena Waymire said the township would cover the excess if Boone Township agrees. Officials from both townships will meet to discuss the issue, with bidders including Robert Lawrence J Anderson for general contracting, Hanlin Brothers for plumbing and heating, and West Electric for electrical work.

Madison County farmers puzzled by cool wet mid June crop effects
In mid June Madison County farmers noted silvery corn leaves and partially filled wheat and rye heads due to freakish temperatures and wind. County Agent Harold R. Berry cited unseasonable warmth early in the growing season as the likely cause of pale corn patches, with normal growth later resuming. High winds later bent corn tops and damaged some fields but new growth looked healthy. The report mentions a Madison County Women’s Republican Club gathering at a residence to hear Anderson attorney George O. Chambers discuss his Washington recount activities and a letter to a Republican congressman thanking him for aid during Chambers’ bid for the Fifth District seat. July 25 was set for the next meeting at Mrs. Toner’s.

The AMA urged mass public use of the Sabin oral polio vaccine, claiming longer lasting immunity than Salk injections. Surgeon General Terry announced some oral vaccine supplies could arrive this fall but likely too late for the current season, forecasting 1961 as a low polio year. The council praised Sabin’s potential to curb poliomyelitis and warned immunity from oral vaccine may reduce reinfection risk, while still endorsing Salk injections for now.
