Many Bright Girls Do Not Enter College
New York based UPI reports a Joint Office of Institutional Research study showing only 55 percent of top ten percent high school graduates pursuing college, with rising tuition and living costs keeping talented women out. The 1952 to 1960 period saw public university tuition jump over 71 percent, suggesting social bias and the value of public education to widen opportunity. The study urges lower costs and continued public support. In Bombay, AP notes Soviet astronaut Yuri Gargarin will visit India in October per A V Baliza of the Indian Soviet Cultural Society.
