Senate votes to double food stamp outlay to 750 million
The Senate approved raising the food stamp program authorization from 340 million to 750 million for the year starting July 1. The vote was by voice with no recorded nays. Senator McGovern called the sum inadequate but supported it as a temporary emergency measure. Senator Holland supported the higher ceiling, preferring 610 million next year but backing the authorization to allow possible higher use.
