Army to Decide On Gas Shipments Following Academy Report

The Army, delaying May 16 gas shipments to New Jersey, indicated it would follow the academy verdict on disposal. The plan would move 12,322 tons of nerve agents by rail to Earle and sink four Liberty ships in the Atlantic, drawing congressional and scientific protests over disaster risks and ocean pollution.

House Readies Monday Vote on Nixon Tax Surcharge

Washington House leaders moved to a Monday floor vote as the income tax surcharge nears expiration. GOP commitments rose to about 170 of 188 party votes, with Mills expected to manage the bill after the July Fourth recess. The Senate meanwhile extended payroll tax withholding for 31 days to keep the surcharge alive briefly. The White House said Nixon is confident the extension will pass.

Talks Continue In Five Day Container Strike

Negotiations between Container Corporation officials and Local No. 1045 of the International Paper Makers and Paper Workers Union resume as union members remain on strike at the Anderson plant. Talks from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. produced only limited progress, with a June 19 contract deadline extended two days and key issues including insurance pensions and pay still unsettled.

June ACT Meeting Cancelled

For the first time in over a year the All-American Community Team postponed its June town hall. The next regular meeting is set for July 21 with the Madison County League of Women Voters handling the program. Willard Ransom, Indianapolis attorney, could not attend June 16 and is rescheduled for August 18. Town hall sessions at the YWCA are open to the public.
