Officials Say Anti-Poverty Pay Too High in New York
Federal anti-poverty officials say New York City teachers in the Head Start preschool program are paid $8 to $9.20 per hour, higher than the national average. Jule Sugarman approved the local plan after resisting higher rates and noting a contract for summer pay. The $83.7 million Head Start aims to provide 25 hours weekly pre-school experience to five and six year olds from poor families, with 530,008 children expected nationwide this summer.
