Volunteers Fight Swollen River Near Ellinwood Kansas
In Ellinwood and Great Bend, volunteers and National Guardsmen battled a swollen Arkansas River that breached a dike west of Ellinwood and lapped levees at Great Bend. Food centers and sleeping quarters were set up for evacuees as workers strengthened a new four foot high dike to hold back the flood.
