ERA falters in Illinois legislature
In Springfield on Thursday the Illinois House fell two votes short 105 to 71 of approving the proposed federal Equal Rights Amendment with a final tally postponed. ERA sponsor Rep Corneal A Davis urged postponement as Gov James R Thompson lobbied Republicans for support. The debate drew dramatic scenes on the floor and galleries as opponents cited abortion concerns and supporters cited national impact.
