Coondog Burial Ground Has Odd History
In Cherokee Alabama the Key Underwood Memorial Coondog Cemetery holds 70 coon hounds with simple to elaborate headstones. Key Underwood and partners John Burns and Joe Foster manage yearly Decoration Day on Labor Day, mowing graves and hosting a hillside gathering begun after Troop the first interred dog in 1937. Most dogs were buried within 50 to 75 miles, with unconventional proofs of a dog’s coonhound standing guiding eligibility.
