Pentagon sources signal possible shift as units from the 1st Marine Division await clarity on which outfit will depart from Mt Regiment. Honolulu task force plans withdrawal with Reserve and National Guard personnel under review. Some 12,000 Guardsmen may remain in Vietnam among the 25,000 total, fueling mixed morale at battalion posts.
The State School Reorganization Commission voted to take no action on declaring the Metro School Corporation a community school. Litigation in Hancock County remains unresolved, directing further decisions to the Indiana General Education Commission and State Superintendent Wells. An approved plan was North Central School Corporation.
Judge Carl Smith barred the blood stained knife from evidence after Public Defender J Bayne Burton argued insufficient identification. Pendleton Reformatory inmates testified Kosak was killed on November 3 1968 and_Shoulders claimed the weapon, while others described dormitory lighting and possible knife possession, with jurors excluded during the ruling.
UPI reports defense sources say the Soviet Union has placed 300 nuclear missiles in Mongolia with boosted air power in Siberia aimed at China's Sinkiang. The move follows clashes on the Sino Soviet border and comes as China warns it is prepared for conventional or nuclear war. Brezhnev and Podgorny recently visited Mongolia for defense talks.
An estimated 20 000 to 25 000 delegates and visitors will attend next week's 80th International Convention of the Church of God in Anderson Indiana. Events begin Tuesday with 300 conferences and 19 mass meetings in Warner Auditorium and run through Sunday. Dr Charles Habib Malik will speak Monday night at 8 and Dr Charles V Weber notes the theme To Know The Living God.
County Treasurer Horace W. Hays reports spring settlement taxes exceed 12.5 million dollars with 12,556,791.92 earmarked for distribution to schools cities welfare and other units over the next six months. He notes spring collections are usually higher due to full-year payments and explains changes in tax clearances effective April 1 1969 including sworn affidavits to avoid delinquent taxes and penalties for false statements. Unpaid taxes after a year are certified as judgments, and automobile tax payment timing for 1971 plate purchases is discussed.
Liberal Democrats push to add broad tax reforms to Nixon's surtax extension proposal. Rep. Vanik aims to bring floor amendments to the surtax bill via the Rules Committee. Surtax runs to June 30 1970 and liberals demand limits on oil depletion, capital gains rules, charitable deductions, and foundations taxation.
The Board of Public Safety endorsed partial police pay gains including a 7 percent raise for most officers and a 450 yearly bump for 1st class patrolmen. Holidays rise to seven, witness pay 3 an hour, technical pay 195 yearly for specialists, chief gets 1200 more, assistant chief 1050, and maximum salary time reduced to 12 years.
John R. Bragg, from Elwood, is the fourth local serviceman to die in Vietnam. Army officials notified his parents that he was killed June 6 while with the First Air Cavalry Division in South Vietnam. The other Elwood youths who died are Gregory Fennimore Michael Downing and John Croy. Funeral arrangements are pending.
