Purdue University reported Indiana crops are growing at an average pace despite showers. Northern and central counties benefit from favorable field work, while soybeans lag slightly behind last year. Corn planting is above average with 5 percent of wheat ripe in the South and soybeans about two inches tall. Unemployment claims rose last week, helped by a Kokomo plant layoff of 2,500 workers and temporary layoffs in Logansport, Michigan City and New Castle.
