Paul Grady, a 41 year old attorney, defeated incumbent Claude Pittman in the Hattiesburg mayoral race. Final unofficial results showed Grady with 3,029 votes and Pittman with 18,027 votes in a GOP test of strength in Mississippi.
Leaders continued with a five day ministers conference lineup. Rev Sterner speaks on Gods Initiative and Mans Redemption followed by Rev Marshall The Continuing Renewal of the Church and Dr Chapman Theological Foundations for a Strong Evangelistic Outreach. Friday features Mr Hall Need for More Aggressive Teachings Through Literature and Saturday Dr Norris sociologists associate professor.
A report from Anderson College notes a fatal accident on Broadway where a car struck a city utility truck in foggy conditions. Victim Jerry Settle, 27, and Donald Seal, 18, among others, were involved. Seal survived with injuries. A separate crash in Delaware County killed Phillip Chestnut, 21, as his car overturned after hitting a guard rail.

R-Valparaiso lawmaker Landgrebe opposed a Senate bill granting the governor broad powers to condemn and dispose of land for the $19 million option to the Atomic Energy Commission. The Senate also passed a House bill on printing and distributing the special session acts, with action winding down at 6 pm and resuming at 7 pm for House cleanup. Funeral services were set for Mrs. Anna V. Flowers DePoy, 60, of 1825 Monroe St., with burial in Mt. Zion cemetery near New Columbus. Her survivors include three sons and other relatives.

Five youths were arrested Sunday in a parking lot near Three Pigs Tavern at 29th and Noble Streets after a theft. Steve J. Justice, 17, pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated, fined $50 and costs, plus 25 days in jail to pay the fine. James R. Rankin, 19, pleaded guilty to multiple charges including Beverage Act violation, disobeying a traffic signal, transporting alcohol, and driving without a license, totaling $99.30 in fines. Severe weather threatened Jasper and Newton Counties from 4:40 to 6:30 p.m. with thunderstorms crossing Illinois into Indiana at about 30 mph, and the Weather Bureau warned of possible severe storms and tornadoes north of Clinton, Kokomo, and Fort Wayne.

Walgreens Drug Stores announces Jack E. Klocke R.Ph. as Regional Director for Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and St. Louis districts overseeing 42 cities including Anderson. He succeeds Harold E. Youssi R.Ph. and began at Walgreens in 193. A St Louis College of Pharmacy graduate, he rose from pharmacist to district manager in 1959 and most recently led the Town district.
