Pauling called to testify over alleged Communist ties
Nobel chemist Linus Pauling faced a closed hearing on charges of links to Communist groups behind his petition against nuclear tests. Subcommittee counsel Robert Morris said Pauling would be questioned Monday and ordered to appear at a public hearing June 18, with possible later dates. Pauling urged the chance to explain but had accepted an invitation to lecture in Paris on June 12. The hearing may consider other scientists who signed his statement and potential subpoenas for additional figures involved in protesting atomic tests. The president commented that many scientists act in good faith though some drift from their fields amid calls to end tests. Earlier Manila dispatch noted 15 percent of the Philippine islands are under cultivation.
