Assassination Sparks Giant Row Over Northern Ireland Violence
In Belfast a senator, Sen. John Barnhill, 61, was shot dead at his Strabane home and the house dynamited amid IRA feuds. Officials blamed rival IRA factions as Britain pressed Dublin to tighten anti guerrilla actions. Prime Minister Faulkner ordered round the clock guards with cross border security, and British troops widened arms searches across Northern Ireland.

US and Canada trade dollars in cross border retail
With the two currencies nearly equal in value, many Toronto and U.S. shops accept the other currency as equal. Some Detroit and Buffalo stores discount Canadian money slightly, while most merchants treat American and Canadian dollars the same. The Ontario Liquor Control Board largely ignores minor exchange differences, and Buffalo merchants report accepting Canadian money since May even when rates put the Canadian at 97 U.S. cents. Current rates show a Canadian dollar at 99 U.S. cents when turned in at banks, and U.S. dollars fetch about $1.01 in Canadian money.
