Deputy Burke Survives Shootout After Whisky Wagon Standoff
Deputy United States Marshal Tom Burke was saved by papers and a checkbook in his coat when John Robinson shot him on Last Night on Line House Road. The bullet struck the documents and caused only a blue mark. Robinson fled, was chased by Burney and Burke, killed the wagon horse, and whisky valued at about thirty pints was found. Robinson surrendered to police and faces assault with intent to murder charges while already under bond for whiskey importation.

Death of Wm. Shirley in Caddo county farm area
Wm. Shirley, longtime Caddo county resident, died at his home north of the city Thursday afternoon after a short illness. Funeral services were conducted at the home by Father Isadore and burial followed in the cemetery north of town. He moved to the county in 1859 and leaves a Corpus Christi brother and a son.

Mrs. John Cernig of the Agency died yesterday evening at her home, believed due to heart failure after a period of poor health. Windstorm damages Presbyterian Mission near city
Yesterday morning a powerful windstorm struck the Presbyterian Mission four miles east of town. It tore up a west peach orchard, partially unroofed the western building, toppled trees and brick flues, blew a fire from a kitchen stove, and damaged ceilings inside the unroofed sections. Residents surveyed the area but found no further damage.
