A Senate inquiry examines a bank note linked to Governor Cox and implies a $5,000 obligation tied to Cox’s 1918 Ohio governorship campaign. The probe centers on whether the amount constituted a campaign contribution and influence on the race.
Governor Cox in Colorado charges Chairman Hays and Republican editors with a conspiracy of silence to divert attention from the League of Nations and Cox’s campaign. He likens Hays to a guerrilla poisoning wells and says editors were urged to minimize his reception and push minor issues at meetings across Denver Pueblo Trinidad and other cities.
Washington reports an implied 1918 contribution of 5000 dollars from Dayton Metal Products to Governor Cox’s campaign prompted the Senate committee to order immediate inquiry. Bank officials and company executives were to testify, with further leads from George B. Lockwood.
The Interstate Commerce Commission approved about a 13.5 percent rise in express rates, adding to a 26 percent increase granted recently. Milk and cream shipments are exempt. Franklin d Olier, national commander, said a resolution to shift national memorial activities from Grand Army to younger soldiers will not be introduced at the American Legion convention. The measure was drawn by three committees from the Grand Army, American Legion and Spanish War Veterans. Dr T Victor Keene said the Legion will likely continue cooperation with the Grand Army in memorial services for former service men.
Nevada officials report five checks totaling 83500 sent by the Federal Bureau of Public Roads disappeared in transit. Authorities suspect the mail was destroyed in a plane crash near Luckey Ohio on September 4.

Prohibitionists break off negotiations after a public letter from George Christian Jr. to Elsie Giles outlines Senator Harding’s stance on the Volstead act. The Prohibition National Committee says Harding would act by his best judgment if elected but would not force congress, ending talks with GOP leaders.
Helena September meeting of the Commercial club workers overseeing state fair entertainment proposed replacing a Helena queen with a Montana queen. The plan would select the prettiest girl at the fair to serve as queen if carried out.
Raids at the home of ex Alderman Herman Schwanz 115 South Twenty seventh street yield five hundred quarts of whiskey one thousand quarts of beer a small distillery 200 gallons of mash two autos and a motorcycle Three men Herman Schwanz Fred Smith and Sam Bowers are arrested The liquor value is about fifteen thousand dollars.
Seattle police arrested 22 year old George McHugh after discovering a complete dynamiting outfit in a car brought to a local garage. The seizure also yielded a canvas bag of change and an automatic pistol, prompting belief the arrest could disrupt an organized gang of yegemen.
Eight officers and directors of the Utah Idaho Sugar company appeared before U S Commissioner H Van Pelt in Salt Lake City and were bound over for trial in South Dakota. Bail set at 2500 dollars each. Similar charges pending in Utah and Idaho. Heber J Grant not named in indictments.
Salt Lake City officials suspect a bomb warning at the Utah-Idaho Sugar and Beneficial Life offices was a distraction from a Sugar House bank robbery. Three bandits escaped with six thousand dollars in cash after holding up the bank shortly before 11 this morning, fleeing in an automobile.
Fire fighters halted a blaze that smoldered for hours before alarms and quickly spread. Damage estimated around 20 000 dollars. Fire started in the men’s rest room near Lambros pool hall wall. Detective Larkin and Dick Mundy spotted the fire. Aerial truck aided roof attack while stage area was saturated to prevent spread. Scenery largely escaped damage. Wall collapse in Lambros pool hall occurred as flames advanced.
In Carson City two inmates Frank Price and Manuel Revere seized Warden Kate Hendrick's automobile and drove off as prison inspectors looked over the facility. A general alarm followed but no trace appeared. sightings described a desertbound vehicle speeding westward.
In Frenchtown valley a raid on Fred P. Violette’s farm yielded bonded Canadian whiskey valued at 10.8 and a still worth 6790. Violette and Pete Morette were arrested. Violette plans to withdraw from the non partisan league bid for county treasurer. Court action and statements are pending after today’s seizure by federal and county officers.
Jam Wilton Crowhurst a plumber on parole from Quentin penitentiary was arrested in Los Angeles in connection with the murder of Jacob Charles Den whose body was found buried in a secret room in the basement of the Denton house. Crowhurst said he was repairing a water heater when the work began and that R C Peete the former tenant aided. He claimed he was paid board for the small room where the body lay and that Mrs Peete introduced him to someone living there named Mrs G connected with the juvenile court in Denver under Judge Lindsey.
In Everett Washington Mrs. R C Hamilton age 50 lured her attendant for a walk on Puget Sound bluffs then jumped to a tree limb 40 feet below and strangled herself with a sweater and ring noose. Fire department crew retrieved the body after a 15 minute descent.
