A pardon board decision orders life terms for Byrne and Chronopolous in connection with a murder case. Chester Powell, described as a wife killer, is reportedly captured near the Hell Roaring Creek District by Polson, ending a large manhunt.
A committee approved peage treaties with Germany Austria and Hungary. The senator said the pacts will be called before the Senate today for action.
A dangerous manhunt unfolds near Polson as two posses scour swamps five miles from town seeking Chester Daley Powell, accused of murdering his wife. Powell is armed and has threatened residents as patrols from Missoula guard the area and nearby routes to prevent escape. The incident has drawn in local families, who barricaded cabins and prepared to fend off the fugitive in case of engagement.
In Indianapolis on September 23 the Borden Land Coal corporation of Virginia filed in the U S district court of Indiana to enjoin the United Mine Workers of America and its officers and members from interfering with its Thacker and Williamson coal fields in Mingo County West Virginia and Pike County Kentucky The plaintiff says the union is an unlawful conspiracy violating the Sherman and Clayton acts and public policy It asks the court to void contracts alleged to provide a closed shop and check off and to stop the union from its activities against the plaintiff and 62 coal operators and mining companies
Winners in the garden exhibit at the chamber of commerce rooms were announced last evening in adult and children's sections. Mrs. Weast and Miss Frink led the adult prizes with 96 and 23 awards respectively, while Mrs. Gramling won 20 awards. The Emerson School banner led the children's section but no final school tally was posted. Canning demonstrations by Miss Graber of Montana State College are scheduled for today at 11 and 2:30.
Police searched passengers arriving from Holyhead at Dublin and examined baggage for arms after the truce proclamation. Searches also occurred at Kingstown with the mail boat. No arrests reported.
