John J. Sullivan former vice commander of the American Legion passes Batte on route to Seattle. The dispatch estimates disaster toll at eleven hundred dead and four thousand injured as Marshal Fogh may stop here on the way west.
John J. Sullivan of Seattle, former vice commander of the American Legion, returning from a two month European tour with the Legion delegation, praised receptions in France and Belgium and noted Senator Walsh’s address at memoir services. He and Mrs. Sullivan were greeted by friends including Alex Levinsky and Moses Cohen at the Milwaukee dei.
The Associated Press reports Attorney General Daugherty and Burns of the Justice Department said top Klan officials could be summoned to Washington for interrogation as part of federal investigations. Prosecutions would largely involve state law unless federal mail fraud statutes are violated. Daugherty stressed no need for vigilante groups to enforce laws.
Chicago fights a $10 million libel suit against the Chicago Tribune. Attorney Weymouth Kirkland argued today that freedom of the press rests on broad historical and constitutional grounds as he challenged the city's case in Cook County Circuit Court. He said action could not proceed without showing a seditious libel.
London dispatch reports the Associated Press that prospects for a Sinn Fein British cabinet conference soon are less hopeful after Prime Minister Lloyd George and several ministers met at Gair Teh yesterday.
The National Catholic Men convention adopted resolutions endorsing arms limitation and support for Ireland self government. President Harding welcomed delegates at the White House as Rear Admiral Benson was named national president. Additional votes favored education reform and improved U S Mexico relations while bishops prayed for armament talks.
Butte women showcase the garden and home economics display at the chamber of commerce exhibit. J L Dorah says the display is the best ever shown by Silver Bow county residents despite inclement weather. Highlights include 53 varieties from Miss E M Brink and two citygrown displays by Mrs William Weast. Mrs James Daley features jellies fruits pickles pies cookies and more. Mrs Lowell Johnson shows 35 varieties of preserved vegetables and fruits while Mrs Leo Gramling presents a large display on Florence avenue.
MISSOULA September report says Chet Powell sought for alleged murder of his wife arrived at a mountain cabin last Friday and forced a woman to cook breakfast at gunpoint before fleeing into nearby brush. He claimed plans to kill two men then himself and had hidden near marshes as a posse closes in. Powell departed with a rifle and 200 rounds of ammunition.
A counterfeit five dollar bill was found in Butte on September 13 triggering publicity that frightened away 24 year old Victor Klingensmith and led officials to link him to a counterfeit plant in a central lodging house. Federal authorities had Klingensmith under watch awaiting an overt act.
Butte reports the arrest of Klingensmith at Salt Lake on Wednesday night after he, an engraver here, left town Sunday. Preston Martineau, a United States Secret Service agent, arrived from Spokane to Butte and searched Klingensmith’s room, uncovering a 100-pound printing press and related equipment and materials.
The Montana board of pardons led by W D Rankin would decide tomorrow at 4 pm on Theodore Chronopolous and Steve Byrry after a hearing in Helena. Gov Dixon had urged commutation from death to life, while Butte citizens protested the recommendation. The governor’s respite for the two condemned men expires Saturday.
In San Francisco the police court began examining Roscoe C Fatty Arbuckle to decide if he should be bound over for trial on Miss Virginia Rappe's murder charge. Three witnesses testified about injuries and death while noting a hospital puncture and possible hypodermic needle mark.

Bakersfield dispatch reports the sheriff dispatched deputies to a Kern River oil field near town after advice of trouble. Eviction of strikers families from company leased homes was expected to begin that day.
French soldiers recover the dead and wounded among the ruins at Oppau after a great battle. Whole families are wiped out in the bombardment and ensuing fighting.

Initial estimates place seven hundred dead and four thousand injured with hundreds more feared missing, as hospitals in Mannheim and nearby towns strain to treat the wounded. The cratered town, once home to 6500 residents, faces a long recovery as authorities coordinate relief efforts.
Washington reports that the finance committee will not report the tariff bill to the Senate until December, as key data on American valuation for customs duties will be unavailable for about 90 days. Chairman Penrose will lead further hearings after Mr Reynolds testified to the Republican committee.
