German warship finishes off the Haytien gunboat after forcing the crew to abandon ship. Firminite sailors were given time to flee but set the vessel ablaze before leaving, and the foreign cruiser completed the destruction with gunfire.
The German gunboat Panther ordered the Crete-a-Pierrot to surrender at Gonaives. After a failed crew evacuation, the Firminist vessel was set ablaze and sunk as Panther fired a dozen or more shots. Local tensions rise as soldiers target St Marc and Port au Prince remains calm.
Cape Haytien reports the Crete-a-Pierrot was sunk at the harbor entrance by the German gunboat Panther after the Firminist vessel had crewed off. The Panther gathered at Port au Prince Sept. 5 and left Sept. 6 to seize the Crete-a-Pierrot. The Markommannia seizure is described as piracy by Berlin dispatches, with Germany seeking satisfaction.
The Crete-a-Pierrot incident draws an expected official report from United States Minister Powell in Port au Prince. U S officials doubt action by the State Department while noting Killick’s actions near Haitian waters may fall under three mile limit rules. McCrea’s communications keep the dispute between Germany and Haiti, as American interests in Haiti remain protected by the Machias. Riceville Iowa dated Sep 7 exhumation identifies the body as Bartholın after a dentist and Chicago detectives verified via the killer’s gold crowned teeth. Bartholın, last seen Monday, worked near Riceville before vanishing and leaving a confession denying accomplices.
William W Roach ex United States senator from North Dakota died in New York after a long cancer illness. He had retired to a New York home and recently improved before relapsing and dying in bed after ten months. Born in Washington in 1840 he was twice married and will be buried in Washington with funeral plans to include senatorial colleagues.
An attache to the state's attorney says the grand jury will convene in a week to hear charges against Claffery, Thompson, and Counselman. The Bartholin confession is not a guaranteed release mechanism and may not influence the outcome. The three suspects remain jailed pending further evidence or habeas corpus relief.
Chicago police chief O Neil states the Iowa field body is William Bartholin. Dr Coey the dentist who filled Bartholin s teeth plus Detective Rohan verified the dental work and letters from Minnie Mitchell were found in Bartholin s pocket during the investigation.

John Sanders is under arrest in Pocatello awaiting charges for the murder of a man with whom he had been working. The victim's half-consumed body was found later among a pile of burning railroad ties.
Deputy Sheriff Griffith brought John Sanders from Cornish Utah to Pocatello Idaho on charges connected to the Downey murder of John Pitlock. Pitlock’s half burned remains were found August 28 near Downey six miles south of town. Sanders admits being with Pitlock but denies the killing. investigators cite strong circumstantial evidence.
On the steamer St Louis the bodies of Mr and Mrs Charles L Fair were laid in plain maple caskets with silver bands and hermetically sealed lead linings. Relatives and women sisters Mrs Hermann Oelrichs and Mrs William K Vanderbilt Jr accompanied the remains to Grand Central and the palace car Ben Wyvis for onward transport.
In Kansas City Kansas a raid on a local joint by a dozen churchmen left one man shot and another seriously hurt. A 500 person mass meeting at Washington Street Methodist raised 500 for a crusade against the joints. Prosecutors moved to arraign arrestees after church leaders pressed for action. A powder magazine at Fort Winthrop on Governor's Island exploded with a deafening blast heard miles away. One man, Albert H. Colton of Somerville, was killed. five others were injured with flesh wounds. others are missing. Debris hurled granite blocks hundreds of yards and a large hole was left at the center of the magazine.
Severe concussion in the city and surrounding areas shatters windows, shakes buildings, and rattles residents in Fast Boston South Boston and the city proper. Emergency crews respond as damage assessment continues.
The Associated Press dispatch shown to President Roosevelt at church in Chattanooga notes the Read house stopover. Secretary Cortelyou said the president had no comment on the matter at that time.
The funeral of Isaac Greenhood was held this afternoon in Helena. Hundreds gathered as Rabbi Jacob Mielziner praised his upright character and kindness. Services were also held by the Odd Fellows and A O U W. Masons conducted the grave rites. Interment followed at the Jewish cemetery.
The Bridgetown smallpox epidemic led to a riot on August 25 as a crowd resisted authorities attempting to remove a patient for isolation. Police were attacked and several officers were injured. order returned after the steamer Plata departed. The outbreak worsens with continued spread.
