U S Trade With Asia Shifts As Cotton Exports Decline

The United States loses ground in Asia especially China where 1905 exports of American cloth were 328 million dollars rising to 80 million in 1913 but falling to 7,371.95 dollars by June 30. The Commerce Department studies underlying causes, noting Japan’s growing control of the Orient market and rising Chinese and Asian textile self sufficiency. American cotton states sell less to Japanese mills while Asia increasingly fabricates plain fabrics locally, signaling a shift in trade and production.
