London report states coal mining in England has effectively ended with miners in some districts halting with no signs of mediation. Dislocations across industries widen as Parliament readiness for reconvening tomorrow prompts focus on the strike and the Irish Home Rule bill debate.
Reports detail the death of hunger striker Fitzgerald in Cork with a planned marriage thwarted by prison officials. Miss Condon, Fitzgerald’s supposed sister and fiancée, cared for him. a wedding was requested but not permitted. Britain faces a miners strike ripple effect with possible wage offers and government mediation amid highway and city unrest.
Bulletin from the Irish Self Determination league says Lord Mayor MacSwiney’s condition declined at Brixton. Doctors and Dr Bedard warn of scurvy risk and urge citrus intake though his sister notes he may refuse to consent. He dictated a telegram to hunger strikers in Cork.
A masked bandit entered a downtown movie theater office in Kansas City Missouri and held up the manager with a revolver. He took about $1,000 plus $150 cash, two cashier's checks totaling 17 500 and a ring valued at 1 200 before locking two officials in a closet and fleeing.
Chicago on October 18 reports that retailers will sell clothing at cost this fall. Andreas Burkhardt of the National Association of Retail Clothiers says the public will push for lower prices and dealers are foregoing profits to meet demand during a temporary period of deflation and unsettlement.

President Wilson confirmed a court martial verdict against Second Lieut. John C. Gottenkrone of the Fifth field artillery. He is dismissed from service and sentenced to 15 years hard labor for desertion at Neuhausen Germany in June 1918 and embezzling 36051 in military funds.
Athens reports King Alexander remains in most grave condition with added lung congestion from complications after a pet monkey bite. The bulletin notes his existing ailments worsened by the incident.
Constantinople Oct 16 The Associated Press reports Guy Davis of Charleston S C was sentenced to four years hard labor for stealing goods from the American Relief organization in the Near Past. Four other defendants received sentences from three months to two years with fines in lieu. Charlie Dolan and William Murray were acquitted.
Secretary of War Baker will arrive in Butte on October 26 from Salt Lake City aboard the Short Line. He will deliver an address on the League of Nations Tuesday evening and stay in Butte all day Wednesday before leaving at 7 PM for the coast. Preparations are under way for the secretary and his party’s entertainment during their visit.
The American Museum of Natural History plans a five year Asian expedition starting next February to seek the missing link and collect a vast natural history trove. It is funded by 256000 dollars with support from American Asiatic Society Asia Magazine and private contributors including Mrs Willard Straight J P Morgan George V Baker and others.
Secretary Daniels orders a court of inquiry led by Rear Admiral Mayo to investigate alleged indiscriminate killings by Marines in Haiti during the American occupation. The board may travel to Haiti to examine if unjustifiable homicides or oppression occurred and to assign responsibility for any acts found.
Anarchists attacked the Aureliano fort near Rome today. Soldiers repulsed the assault after a brief exchange of fire.
The U S circuit court of appeals upheld the conviction of 89 members of the I W W in Sacramento from January 1919 for conspiring to violate the selective draft and espionage acts.
London reports a Russian official statement that anti Bolshevist forces push east of Sinyava. Attacks on Novo Konstaninov south of the Bug river were repulsed with strong artillery support. Bolshevists reoccupied Minsk as Poles abandoned it, and Bolshevist troops retreat to new positions in the Slutsk Polesta area.
President Wilson moved to confirm whether a French representative informally asked Senator Harding to head a League of Nations style project. He released his letter to Harding asking for accuracy about a St Louis quote and noted the gravity of such inferences. The State Department conveyed the inquiry to France via Ambassador Wallace in Paris.
Senator Harding told the White House that informal French spokesmen asking America to lead an association of nations did not involve the French government in any violation of international proprieties. He spoke at Green Castle Indiana, with further remarks continued on page two.
Republican and Democratic national, senatorial and congressional committees must file under oath complete reports of all receipts over 104 and all expenditures promises and pledges since the last report. Chairman Kenyon announced the requirement and said subpoenas will issue for noncompliance before the November election.
