In Indiana industrial towns Republican crowds greeted William Jennings Bryan as he toured Swinging Around the Circle. He denounced Republicans for attempting to buy trade with human blood and pressed his anti war or anti tariff message during the visit.
W J Bryan toured Noblesville Arcadia Tipton Elwood Alexandria Marion Hartford City Muncie Winchester Richmond Anderson and others in Indiana by car platform and stands. He attacked trusts and imperialism defending democracy and condemning Republican party tactics while urging voters to oppose party harmony over duty.
Paris dispatch reports the international peace Congress issuing an appeal to nations. It condemns Britain for not accepting arbitration in South Africa and regrets other governments did not offer mediation. It urges just China policy, condemns Armenian massacres, and promotes arms reduction and permanent arbitration treaties.
In Wheeling on October 5 General Dryden, a leading attorney, was shot and killed by his son in law Thomas Workman. During a dispute with Dryden over his wife, his father in law intervened and fatally shot him to protect his daughter. Mrs Dryden is prostrated.

John F. Kunzler, president of the American Flint Glass Workers' union, told the Industrial Commission he represents 9 000 to 10 000 workers as flint glass branches united. Special Dispatch to the Standard reports miner Michael Cole was held up and robbed in a saloon near the Northern Pacific depot. Victim says about 1,000 dollars was taken. James Kelly Frank Farrell and J Benson were arrested in connection with the crime.

In Ghent Belgium on October 5 a conflict erupted between socialists and soldiers during an open performance by a regimental band. Socialists sang revolutionary songs and pelted soldiers, who drew swords and fought, wounding several including the bandmaster and an officer. Many arrests followed.
Lulu D. Hay of Jacksonville Illinois swore to Senator Jones Democratic National Committee chairman that she did not know W J Bryan would be paid 150 by silver mine owners to push a silver plank into the Kansasity platform.
Western railroads agree to meet the Great Northern rates from Chicago to Washington Idaho and Montana. They tried to force the Great Northern to limit rates to St Paul and Minneapolis but the company kept its original announcement.
Mine owners agree to wage increases and say big companies will follow. Further concessions will not be granted and coal carrying roads will show no favoritism.

Hazelton Pa October 5 President Mitchell rejected a dispatch alleging an officer of a political group planned the anthracite strike with Mr Johnson of a national committee and Indianapolis officials He said the claim is untrue and warned against using miners suffering for political gain.
United Mine Workers locals in Shenandoah and Mahanoy valleys arrange a 2 p.m. parade and mass meeting with an address by President Mitchell. About 15,000 workers are invited to participate as organizers send reps to neighboring towns. General Goddin says no troops will be withdrawn after the demonstration.
Eight Italian workers on the night shift for Calevia Pardee & Co at Lattimer colliery were attacked on the main road to Hollywood by about 25 women, mostly Hungarians and Italians from Minesville. One man suffered a severe head wound and others were struck. crowds of foreigners grow more visible and volatile. No change in worker numbers reported.
At quitting time a group of 30 Latti mer mine workers being taken home by railroad car were assaulted by about one striker. Stones and rocks were thrown as the workers faced the attack near Hageston.

Hazelton Pa Oct 5 A Pardee and Co operators of the Cranberry and Crystal Ridge mines employing about 1000 men posted at its collieries this afternoon an advance of 19 percent in wages. It is the first individual operator in the Lehigh region to grant this advance and signals that others may follow.
Edward Coyle, a victim of the Shenandoah mine riot two weeks earlier, succumbed today after being struck by a stray bullet as he checked on his children’s safety.
Shamokin Pennsylvania October 5 Thirty hours after massed Mount Carmel marchers visiting Shamokin there is no sign of the excitement that followed last night’s events. Quiet settles over the town as authorities note no new disturbances.
