Alleged Slayer Chooses Suicide Over Capture Near Oconto
Dennis Chester, alleged killer of Florence Barton of Kansas City, tried to kill himself in the county jail at Broken Bow Neb after being recaptured near Oconto following an escape from a train. He tore a blanket, tied it to a jail bar, and slipped the noose around his neck before falling and losing consciousness. He was found by Sheriff Talbot and H F P Kennedy and given medical aid. doctors said he had an excellent chance to recover. Chester had been brought from near Oconto to await extradition to Kansas City for the Barton killing and had previously escaped from a Chicago Burlington & Quincy train. He was recaptured by a deputy sheriff and a physician.
