A government statement reports the death of China’s emperor navy secretary, Metcalf Resions, with official confirmation signaling a formal end to the administration’s immediate leadership.
Reports from Peking state the emperor of China died at four this morning with official confirmation delayed until evening. Prince Chante and Pu Wei named heir presumptive as the dowager empress and grand council anticipated a swift power transition. The empire, long under the influence of the dowager empress, faces a disputed succession amid fears of a coup and Manchu dominance.
Secretary of the Navy Victor Metcalf resigns effective December 1 due to ill health. Assistant Secretary Truman Newberry will be named successor. Special dispatch from Helena reports a tie between Hunt and Westmoreland for the Madison county legislature seat. Attorney General Galen says only a gubernatorial special election can settle the result, as the law requires the governor to order it. Governor Norris is away and no call date is known.
St Petersburg Nov 1 N. A. Kho mausikoff president of the duma says he will not seek another term. He cites lack of support from majority leaders on questions of duma organization and is urged by parliamentary circles to reconsider before tomorrow when the house president is to be chosen.
A dispatch from Julfa on the Persia Russia frontier reports a detachment of Persian nationalists sent from Tabriz by Satar Khan is constructing fortifications near Julfa to resist a possible Russian advance toward Tabriz.
Lincoln Nebraska dated item states Mr and Mrs W J Bryan will depart Sunday for a pleasure trip to Mexico seeking rest and recreation The itinerary was not announced and Bryan will deliver a commencement address in Philadelphia on December 2.
In Hamm Westphalia Germany a crowd of about 1500 angry miners protested during Prince Eitel Frederick and Minister Del Bruck visit to the disaster site where over 300 men were entombed and likely burned. The prince was hooted at and blocked from advancing. a deputation asked him to seek a miners protection law, which he pledged to report to Emperor William. The crowd then dispersed peacefully after a spokesman urged calm.
New York report says Prof Mark W Harrington once led the U S Weather Bureau was found in Morris Plains New Jersey asylum after wandering Trenton streets for over a year His wife identified him after authorities confirmed his identity The case follows a decade-long disappearance and admission to the asylum as a mentally impaired patient
Kalispell Nov 1 Former Governor Robert B. Smith lies dying at the North-Seestern hospital of acute poisoning. His wife son and daughter are at his bedside. He had been ill years and had an operation in New York City two years ago. Smith served as Montana governor from 1895 to 1899 and later practiced law in Butte before moving to Flathead County. He was elected on the Democratic populist ticket but later aligned with the Democratic party and served in the constitutional convention and as U S district attorney for Montana.
Francisco November 1 9 0 6 Assistant District Attorney Frank J Heney in charge of the bribery graft prosecution was shot in the San Francisco courtroom by Morgia Haas an ex convict The victim lay bleeding from a wound near the temple as police wrestled Haas to the floor The crowd surged for exits while Heney requested his wife and the proceedings stalled during the drama in the Ruef bribery trial Haas claimed he was ruined by Heneys exposure and vowed to kill him The wounded official was rushed to Lane hospital later moved to Central Emergency and then Lane hospital again while authorities detain Haas and investigate the attack
