Thousands march in a Great Armistice Day observance with Dan Malloy as speaker. Citzens in Butte line the snow and wind, paying tribute to soldiers who fought the Kaiser, while many organizations participate in the patriotic event. An eagle is mistaken for an airplane during the pageant.
Rotarians paid eloquent tributes to Allied and American soldiers at an Armistice Day meeting. Fred Purman praised the heroes who died for freedom and recalled valiant French and English troops, while Carl Nissler announced plans to entertain sick veterans at Galen with help from Anaconda Rotarians. The parade included veterans, auxiliary members, the American Legion, Red Cross, Boy Scouts, and fraternal orders, with onlookers and a display of doughnuts and coffee at Legion headquarters. A crowd watched a mysterious airship overhead as speculation swirled about its origin.
Hans Ernst Kurt Mortimer Kessel aged 77 longtime Milwaukee newspaper man and son of a German noble family died at the Protestant home for the aged. He served as an officer in the Prussian army in 1866 and 1870 and was once a wealthy Iowa brewer before Prohibition, later returning to journalism before retirement.
Spokane dispatch reports partial Montana results from November 2 referendums and constitutional amendments. Washington Nov. 11 The Associated Press reports a prohibition ruling blocks sale of hops and malt to makers of home brewed beer. Enforcement officials note the Volstead act allows no sale of components used to make illicit beverages, ending home brewing in practice nationwide.
Milwaukee dispatch reports no firm word on the Great Lakes naval training seaplane missing since Wednesday. Locals say tugs searched from Manitowoc and Two Rivers after a sighting 15 miles off Manitowoc. Crew includes Lieut. Harry T. Barr Ensign Edwin M. Clark and Gunner's Mate John Caesar. Coast guard units and four submarine chases from Sault Ste Marie were ordered as officials consider a possible capsize or storm drift across Lake Michigan.
A party of shipyard workers led by the union jack returned to work from a city hall Armistice day event when attacked by a nationalist crowd from North Queens Street. Police intervened to quell the disturbance but a girl was shot in the hand and another injured on the head.
The id bell in Independence Hall tolled to mark armistice hour in Philadelphia. The bell was tolled once for each of the states and territories as part of a general observance today.
In Tralwann, Ireland, November reports describe Frank Holtman, a farmer alleged Sinn Fein commandant, stopped near his home by uniformed men who demanded his name. He complied before being shot, the attack described as a brutal extrajudicial killing with immediate local uproar. Police investigation follows as residents question motive and identity of the assailants.
London dispatch reports the Irish home rule bill clears its third reading in the house of commons as Liberal and Labour members resume boycott. Prime Minister Lloyd George defends the measure while warning that conscription in Ireland could threaten Britain. The plan envisions dual legislatures for north and south with a 40 member council, limited powers, and safeguards for Ulster.
