Secretary indicates continuation of the annual tax bill for three or four years. It is understood a proposal to abolish the excess profit levy will be made. It is believed that only salaries above five thousand dollars will be taxed under the proposed revenue law. Enormous obligations loom.
The French ambassador Jules Jusserand will return to Washington on November 24 with the latest French views on recasting the League of Nations covenant. Diplomats expect changes to be necessary and require agreement by signatory powers. He will also discuss Franco American commercial treaties and tariffs after administration changes in Washington.
In Dublin and Belfast regions gunfire disrupted streets as Sinn Fein targets sparked panic. Seven volunteers killed near Tralee, Cork arrests during curfew, and police wounded amid mob attacks. In Londonderry a police guard battle left five officers shot, shops burned, and residents fleeing. military and police conducted raids and searches through the night as curfew persisted.
Paris reports General Wrangel remains at Isthmus of Perekop, defending Crimea with a hopeful outlook. Bolsheviks are unlikely to break through the line, though France will not send military aid, according to M. De Martel, French high commissioner at Sebastopol.
United States Geological Survey reports soft coal output of 12,338,000 tons for the week of Oct 30, a new annual peak. Daily production averaged over 2,000,000 tons for four weeks, the longest streak at that rate since 1918. Anthracite fell to 1,696,000 tons, down 219,000 from the prior week due to Mitchell Day observances.
Edan Ellis an 18 year old typist was found slain with throat wounds near her home in St Louis. Albert Ellis a 21 year old suitor confessed to police that he killed her after she rejected him. He claimed a razor broke as he attempted the third slash. Ellis, an electrician, was arrested after his mother in law reported threats. Large crowd gathered outside the police station as the confession circulated.
The body of John P. Weedward, air mail pilot, was recovered from his plane wreckage at Tie Siding, 49 miles west of Cheyenne, after a snowstorm delayed reports. He was last heard over Laramie the previous afternoon and had departed East Lake City Saturday morning en route to Cheyenne.
Missoula November 7 An overseas veteran Leon Richardson was found dead in a car near Plains eighty three miles west of Missoula with two bullet holes in the back of his head. Officials say the murder occurred likely Saturday night and leave no doubt of foul play.
Frank J. James and Raymond W. Schuck of Camden confessed to Gay that they killed David S. Paul, a Camden bank messenger, robbed him of about $40,000, and buried the body in the Jersey pines near Tabernacle. The money was partly buried in Evergreen cemetery, Camden.
Edward Winterscheidt known as Ed Winters of 1718 Grand Avenue was shot and seriously wounded while hunting about five miles up the canyon near Durant station on the Butte Anaconda and Pacific road. He was mistaken for a deer by a companion and shot through the right shoulder. Dr. H H James of Murray hospital and others rushed to the scene but by early morning Winterscheidt had not been removed. He works as a truck driver for Jones Fruit Company and left home with Peter Ward to spend the day in the hills hoping to bag a deer. A truck and several men were dispatched to Durant to aid him.
E Corecco, about 50, choked on a piece of meat last night at the Quick Lunch cafe on East Front street. He was taken to the emergency hospital and died en route. coroner notified. Corecco had been in Butte two weeks, staying at the Hub hotel, from Whitehall where he worked as a ranch hand. An inquest likely Tuesday or Wednesday.
In Torio California’s public meeting about California anti Japanese legislation, about a thousand residents heard journalists minor politicians and student orators urge a firm stance toward the United States. One editor suggested meeting anti Japanese discrimination with anti American action in the Orient, while war talk was discouraged by speakers.
Rome reports the Irish Catholic bishops meeting at Maynooth and issuing a resolution denouncing terrorism and government partiality. The Corriere d'Italia printed it, provoking a strong letter from Deputy Mauri of the Catholic party urging Italy to heed Ireland's pleas and the cruelties suffered.
Nov 6. The cabinet reportedly plans to withdraw Japanese troops from the Chantao area on the Korean Manchurian border. Withdrawal hinges on China’s pledge to maintain order and protect Japanese lives and property. Diplomatic council to review the proposal amid inquiries from American British and French governments.
