Dunn and his Wobblies trail as early returns show Duggan ANC A with a 147 vote lead and figures to be challenged. The count hints at a likely recount as supporters await final tallies and possible disputes.
New York dispatch reports a rising Republican wave in presidential and congressional contests as late returns come in. Democrats suffer losses including Champ Clark in Missouri. Lenroot, Jones, and Shortridge win Senate seats. Harding leads in several states, Wilson silent, and Johnson proclaims the league ended.
Additional precincts report a Republican candidate leading by about 32,000 votes over his opponent. Final results awaited as figures accumulate from remaining precincts.
Republican ticket led statewide as results from about half the precincts show J M Dixon well ahead for governor and W J McCormick leading Burton Watson in the first district. Other party margins include Harding over Cox and Reynolds, Story, Rankin, Stewart, Walker, Porter and Trumper with sizable Republican leads in state offices.
A petition filed in the circuit court of appeals asks for a rehearing in the William Haywood and I. W. W. cases. The court had upheld the original sentence by Federal Judge Landis. The petition contends errors occurred in the first hearing.
Final Silver Bow returns record large Republican majorities from 3,500 to 3,700, with Wheeler narrowly leading Dixon for governor by 167 votes. Sheriff Duggan trails by 147, and large red-left gains are noted in county and state races. Recount likely. officials claim tally irregularities and possible counting errors.
The Orlando incident describes five Black residents burned to death and a sixth fatally harmed after a polling dispute over Mose Norman’s vote. White attackers wounded two men and injuries spread among other participants, including a former police chief, as the mob dispersed.
President-elect Warren G. Harding spent his first day resting from election night tension and reviewing late returns with focus on the sixty seventh congress. He welcomed growing Republican wins in both chambers, aiming to secure a working majority to enable his legislative program.
Montana election returns from 174 precincts show favorable votes for higher education funding and a boxing bill. Direct primary and party influence measures led adverse results, while irrigation bond support was strong though highway bonds and tax management reforms remained uncertain. The presidential primary repeal proposal trailed with 7 089 to 13 085.
Helena Nov 3 Returns indicate house and senate overwhelmingly Republican. Mrs Maggie Hathaway of Ravalli, opposed by the Non-Partisan League, is one of few Democrats to win. League ticket appears snowed under in most counties.
North Dakota returns show Harding leading with 10,000 votes to Cox 2,876 and Debs 274 across 113 of 2,201 precincts. For governor Frazier trails with 78,656 to J F T O'Connor's 87,129. for U S senator Ladd leads over Perry in early returns from 235 precincts with 16,507 to 14,736.
Havana November 3 Dr Alfredo Zayas has been elected president of Cuba by the Associated Press report.
An extra freight train collided with the rear of the St. Louis and San Francisco passenger train No. 403 near Racine Missouri. The crash demolished a private car attached to the passenger train and three officials aboard the train are reported to have died.
Governor Cox announced plans to study conditions in Europe early next year after surrendering his state office in January. He will travel abroad for study, then proceed with work and rest before a Mississippi hunting trip mid next week and a Friday departure for the state capital. He also sent a congratulatory message to Senator Harding offering to support the nation’s chief executive in any emergency.
Attacks on police were reported from Ardmore Killernaale and Carrick-on-Shannon to Athlone. A military relief party ambushed, one soldier killed and two wounded. An officer and seven soldiers were disarmed. In Killernaale a civilian was killed and several injured. A police lorry ambush left one policeman dead and three wounded.
London November 3 Winston Spencer Churchill secretary of war told the house of commons that a military inquiry into Ireland has led to the decision to court martial several soldiers and noncommissioned officers.
London November 3. Delegates of the miners federation passed a resolution to end the coal strike and urge a return to work at once with full resumption anticipated by next Monday. A ballot showed 338,045 against continuing and 346,504 in favor of staying out. only four districts opposed accepting the government offer. Railroads are expected to resume full services next Monday.
