In a brilliant engagement American forces under the French Army captured Cantigny after a heavy artillery prep. They took a trench line 600 yards deep and 2,000 yards wide, took 170 prisoners, and cleared machine gun positions with grenades and tanks aiding. The assault reached the second position within about three quarters of an hour, while French observers praised the Americans.
Paris May 28 Avi and Lorgnat completed a round trip in a hydro airship carrying mail in 3 hours 10 minutes. It marks the first step in forming an aerial postal service between England and France. The day was fair and warm with southeast winds.
San Francisco May Mooney a Regenterentenced to death for murder in con was to die today. Judge Franklin presided at the trial and within 10 days the sentence must be carried out. A pardon petition veto and a request from President Wilson for executive clemency are being pushed by Mooney, backed by the American Federation of Labor, citing perjured testimony and the right to a fair trial.
London reports 23694 total casualties for the week ending today with 168 killed or died of wounds and 20264 wounded. The week shows the largest totals since the start of German offensives. Minneapolis wires that North Detroit led drives, reporting 518,667 raised against a 200,000 goal.
German forces push along a 20 mile Aisne sector as British and French troops yield ground. Berlin reports villages captured and 15000 allied prisoners while reserves mass for a broader push. Americans, British and French counter, with gains at Montdidier and near Ypres amid heavy losses on both sides. An Italian offensive continues along the Plave and at Cape Bile. Bombs strike Paris suburbs as German long-range guns shell Carts.
Five Marines and two American soldiers receive the Medal of Honor for acts in France near Verdun and the St Mihiel salient. Fred C. Shaffner and Carl O. Kingsbury are recognized for aiding casualties and cool under fire. Walcott Winchenbaugh A. Sundvall Private Charles Tumits and Frank Alekno earn citations for single handed assaults, saving leaders and delivering messages under heavy fire. Alekno later died of wounds.
