England's representative at the U.S. capital and dean of the diplomatic corps, Lord Prunceforte, died after a long illness described as asthma and rheumatic gout. His death ends a lengthy diplomatic era and prompts tributes from international officials and the British government.
Washington May 24 Lord Pauncefote the British ambassador to the United States died at 5 35 this morning after a period of illness marked by asthma and rheumatic gout He collapsed late in the day and died peacefully at the embassy Attending physicians included Dr Jung and Dr Osler His death prompted half mast flags and condolences from Secretary Hay and the president The funeral is planned as a state ceremony with a church service at St Johns Episcopal and burial at Rock Creek cemetery The remains may be sent to England aboard a United States warship after family approval
London reports King Edward and the Marquis of Lansdowne sent cablegrams of condolence to Lord Pauncefote's family immediately after the embassy head's death was received at the office.

Fremont Nebraska May 24 funnel shaped clouds swept around the town and toward Hooper twelve miles away. The storm toppled several barns and small buildings but no lives were lost or injuries reported. Lightning cut wires causing alarming untrue railroad reports.
Berlin May 24 It is believed the Hamburg news that Quezaltenango Guatemala was destroyed by an earthquake lasting three quarters of a minute echoes earlier Guatemala quake shocks on April 18 19 and 20 which leveled Quezaltenango and were felt broadly across the region.
At Stanford University President David Starr Jordan demanded the resignation of Latin department head E M Pease after a dispute over his removal. Pease refused and was dismissed effective July 21, with charges of selfishness and personality conflict cited by Jordan.
Justice O Donnell issued warrants for nine individuals delinquent in occupation tax payments. Complaints sworn by County Treasurer W L Steele. named include Dr J M Blake dentist Dr C F Richardson dentist W C Wiley lawyer A P Heywood lawyer F N McIntire lawyer Quong Gone Sam Sing Quong Wing merchants. Authorities expect more warrants as others repay debts.
In the Judith mountains the old Spotted Horse mines are being developed by a sizable force of miners. High grade ore shipments are regular and free milling ore is placed on the dump. The mill on the property is not running now but there is strong likelihood of resuming operations soon.

The attorney general's office issues an opinion on whether children of part Indian blood on the Blackfeet reservation may attend public schools. The reply follows an inquiry from State Superintendent W. W. Welch and a Harlem Choteau county district clerk.
The opinion states that children who remain wards of the government and receive rationing and support should have their education provided by agents of the government. If fathers or children sever tribal ties and do not receive government aid, they may be eligible for admission to state public schools.
The Tolstoi case reports confirm the Russian novelist Count Tolstoi is ill with typhoid fever. His temperature is noted at 102 and his mind remains lucid. A later telegram from Yalta says his condition has suddenly worsened.
Dr H Armstrong contractor for beef for graders along the Great Northern branch from Jennings to Crow's Nest coal fields reports the raid completed and steel laid to the Elk river mouth on the other side of the international line. Some grade remains but will be finished by the steel gang as it advances and the line should reach the mines in about 30 days.
Famous American sculptor Augustus Saint Gaudens is chosen by the Memorial Association committee to model the statue. The work is to be completed in about fifteen or sixteen months.
Augustus St Gaudens has been commissioned to create the bronze statue of Marcus Daly for a Butte memorial. The $25,000 work will stand on a pedestal designed by the committee, with unveiling likely in the fall next year on Daly’s third death anniversary.
The state superintendent of public instruction calls for eliminating politics from education. He praises county superintendents and warns that frequent changes waste the system and hinder progress. He urges re election of current superintendents regardless of party, stressing children and teaching quality as paramount.
In Santiago de Chile a protocol between Argentina and Chile is to be signed on May 246 or 27. It lists that among other provisions all existing contracts will be reviewed and aligned under the agreement.
The pact requires cancellation of shipbuilding on both sides and 18 months notice for new contracts. It remains in force five years with compulsory arbitration and a non intervention pledge. Argentina accepts the Peru Bolivian status quo and none may fortify Magellan Straits or sell ships to unfriendly powers.
State Auditor J H Calderheady hints Equitable Life Assurance may lose its Montana license if its personal property tax, billed by Lewis and Clarke County Assessor Martien, remains unpaid. The assessor seeks revocation. the attorney general advises.
Pensions have been granted to Peter Green of Butte and Mary Fr. Larue of Great Falls. Postmasters commissioned include Richard Tobin of Birdseye and Oscar R. Cutting of Hinsdale.
