Supply ships are seen as tensions rise with plans for a possible attack by Togo on Rojestvensky before Russians and Colliers meet. The rendezvous in the Ballintan Channel could trigger battle ahead of the Pacific detour.
A Hongkong dispatch notes sighting Russian volunteer fleet steamers with a large transport in the Hainan straits on May 20. Paris reports speculation on Russian fleet movements near the Babuyan islands and Luzon, with possible coaling at the Balintang channel and continued tension with Japan.
At St. Petersburg the admiralty holds an air of expectancy as news about Admiral Rojestvensky’s fleet is awaited. No official word on his whereabouts is given, but many expect the Russian fleet to move toward its ultimate destination. A partial prisoner exchange has largely been effected between the Russian cruiser Ekaterinoslav crew and the Japanese steamer Sabu crew.

In Owensboro Kentucky on May 22 Bob Shaw a supposedly insane Negro fires on a posse near Waitman killing Deputy Sheriff William C. Brown and wounding seven including Deputy Marshal John J. Jackson and Dr G H Plitt as a mob burns Shaw's house.
Chicago May 22 Judge G C Cutting disallows a $100 000 claim by Dr L C H Zeigler for medical services against the Harriet McVicker estate stating the bill is excessive He orders a moderate rebill The court allows a $10 000 claim under a contract shown in court
Burton Keville a leading St Louis society figure from an old family died in his room by drinking carbolic acid. The death is noted as a self inflicted act in the latest police briefing.
A massive cave in at Senator Clark's United Verde copper mine in Jerome Arizona collapses rock and timber, sending clouds of sulphur smoke from a long burning section. About 300 miners escape unharmed as hoists and smelting operations shut down, officials hopeful repair within a month.

The Montana Supreme Court reversed a Gallatin county district court ruling in Renepe Owenhouse Co. vs Jacob Scheidegger. The court held the receiver order was issued without legal evidence or proper notice, and the district court should have vacated the order.
The American Baptist Publication Society adopted a resolution denouncing Mormonism and urging Congress to remove Reed Smoot of Utah from the Senate. Copies were ordered sent to President Roosevelt, Vice President Fairbanks, Speaker Cannon, and Senator Burrows. The measure cites investigations showing the Mormon hierarchy defying state and national law.
Helena May 22 Special Dispatch Attorney General Galen ruled State Auditor Cunningham cannot issue a warrant to pay a claim against a exhausted year appropriation. The claim must await legislative appropriation. Printing funds for 1905-6 run $12,000 per year. current need exceeds this, though a $24,000 two year fund exists.
Washington May 22 The Machen Lorenz Crawford postoffice conspiracy case on the purchase of letter carriers satchels was adjourned to tomorrow by agreement of counsel. Machen’s lawyer said he could not plead today. Crawford and Lorenz appeared in court. Machen was absent.
In Vicksburg Mississippi May 22 Ohio dedicated forty monuments in the national military park to soldiers who fell in the siege. Governor Herrick and an Ohio party of about 100 visitors attended and heard an address from the governor.
In Helena on May 22 Judge Smith postponed the trial of W. W. Welch charged with withholding state funds during his tenure as state superintendent of public instruction. Former Attorney General James Donovan pleaded not guilty and sought a speedy trial, but the court moved the case to October with bail at fifty dollars. The Slattery case from Silver Bow was also postponed to the fall term unless a July session is called.

In Bellingham Washington two men Davis and Donnelly, detained for decoying a drunken man and robbery, are suspected of killing F. L. Dames the elderly butcher. Their cabin search yielded an overcoat identified by four witnesses as Dames’s, linking them to the April 11 hatchet murder.
