An anarchist placer drops a bomb in Warsaw and stumbles, causing disastrous results as authorities respond. The incident disrupts a tense scene in the city with uncertain casualties and ongoing investigation.
In Warsaw on May 14 a workman carrying a bomb exploded on Mio dowa street injuring several and killing two detectives. The blast also killed bystanders and wrecked a nearby cafe as Governor General Maximovitch, who had been threatened, attended cathedral services nearby. Police suspect the bomb targeted the governor general. the bomber was identified as Polish shoemaker Dobrowolski.
May 19 report from Gunshu Pass says weather cleared yet roads remain washed out and impassable. Japanese forces are massing and pressing the Russian left while a right flank stroke is anticipated as the real aim, with cavalry exchanges ongoing.
Helena mourns Ed win Warren Toole in a large state funeral held at his brother Gov J K Toole's residence. Attendees include veterans groups the Helena Bar Association and many from Butte Bozeman and Spokane. Honorary pallbearers and active pallbearers named. Rev Arthur R Kasey delivered brief sermon.
The 400000 pound clip of Robert Selway was sold to Alfred Willey representing Silverman Bros. of Chicago for 25 cents this morning, the highest price paid in the vicinity this season.
Erret L. Smith, ten-year employee of the Bank of Fergus County, was arrested at Lombard while traveling from Lewistown to Helena. The bank claims a shortage of 600 to 700 dollars, charged as grand larceny. Smith will be jailed with the sheriff at Townsend and returned to face the charge soon.
Secretary Morton will leave the cabinet on July 1 if the president accepts the resignation. He has not completed plans for the future and has several offers under consideration.
Chicago May 19 The joint committee meets as President Shea and Attorney Meyer press for best terms before recommending settlement. Employers and labor leaders predict resolution within 24 hours with the strike ending by noon tomorrow. Meanwhile judges sentence young strikers at public schools and express company tensions persist over driver rein statement.
Butte high school captured the state interscholastic meet with 27 points at the Montana field. Anaconda’s Joe Horn led as individual champion with 22 points, while Missoula and others followed. a large crowd witnessed finals, medals, and an awards ceremony at Union Opera House.
In Chicago on May 19 Johann Hoch was found guilty of murder and a jury recommended the death penalty in Judge Kernsten's court. Hoch, a self confessed bigamist accused of 40 marriages, vowed he would be ready to die and did not want a new trial despite plans by his lawyers to appeal. The verdict came swiftly after three ballots with 12 jurors voting for death.
