Pioneer Montana newspaper man Hugh M'Quaid suffered apoplexy at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Helena and died moments later, with fellow editors and staff reacting to the sudden loss.
Helena reports the death of Hugh McQuaid a veteran Montana newspaper man in his 60s. He collapsed at the Cosmopolitan hotel and died within minutes after a brief apoplexy episode. Funeral plans through his lifelong friend Charlies D. Curtis were not finalized. He had a long career in printing mining and editing including work on the Independent in Deer Lodge and later ownership roles in Helena. He never married and leaves relatives in Montana and connections to notable figures in mining and church circles.
The district court jury term closed with seven cases disposed. William Haywood was found not guilty of manslaughter. Frank Brown received three years for burglary. Frank Marmor aka Wegner got three years for forgery. Fred Calder pleaded guilty to forgery and got five years. Plas Stenberg was found guilty of forgery and sentenced to one year. J. J. O Har a was found not guilty of assault with a deadly weapon. The next term will begin around June 16. A suit by Public Administrator Hansen sought $941 from William Mueller and D L S Barker in relation to Henry Todd’s administrator duties.
The complaint alleges that on September 17, 1900, Todd was found to be a defaulter in the administration of the estate to the extent of the judgment requested.
W H Heffner was examined by county officials and doctors after threats to kill family members. The examining board ruled he was of unsound mind and ordered his transfer to the asylum.
The First Presbyterian Church of Butte celebrates 24 years since organization in 1878 with Rev. E J Groeneveld as pastor for 14 years. The church has grown from 86 members in 1888 to 625 adult members now, serving 950 in Sunday schools, and is the largest Presbyterian church in the state. A census suggests about 3500 Presbyterians in the county.
