The defendant testifies denying his daughter's accounts of their relationship and asserts he did not kill his son in law Walbridge. He calls the stories false and maintains his innocence during the trial proceedings.
Special Dispatch to the Standard reports on Joseph C. Hunter's testimony in a murder case in Philipsburg. Hunter denies killing his son in law Hiram Walbridge on Georgetown flats April 30 1900 and rebuts claims of improper relations with his daughter. Witnesses Ray Hunter and others detail the camp sequence and the Mayer name deception. The defense and prosecution clash over evidence as the case heads toward a jury verdict.
County attorney who prosecuted the Dotson matter will retire on April 1 and Dotson’s new counsel will assume the case, signaling a probable resumption of proceedings before that date.
In London the House of Commons suspended Irish nationalist John Dillon after he called Mr Chamberlain a damned liar during a debate on South African affairs. The motion, carried 248 to 48, sends Dillon from the chamber for up to a week amid heated exchanges and renewed attacks on government policy.
Fuller, a sheepherder from Dawson county working for Bert Shorey, endured 15 foot snow drifts to protect his sheep during a severe storm. He arrived at St. Vincent's hospital in Billings with hands and feet frozen, facing possible amputation. He aided his flock until help arrived, then sought treatment.
Judge Wright reports to General Wright that about 93 percent of the Philippines has no insurrection and Americans travel unarmed in much of the territory. Minor unrest exists in Luzon provinces and Samar with some thefts and robberies, while authorities push rebuilding and policing using local native forces.
General Nelson A. Miles told a Senate military affairs committee the general staff bill would subvert military unity and warned he would not remain in his post if passed. He argued section 7 could promote a captain to head the army, undermining centralized command amid wartime. Secretary Root described the plan as advisory, not coercive, and noted potential risks to the secretary of war without forethought and peace-time planning.
March 20 reports Rhodes slept better and improved condition with doctors hopeful for a voyage to England next week. Dr Jameson notes possible departure. March 21 bulletin says lung difficulty ameliorated but heat prevented sleep.
Charles Wyman was convicted in district court of assault in the second degree for shooting and wounding William M. Oakley on January 30 after Oakley crossed Wyman’s ranch with a load of wood. The jury set the punishment at one year in the penitentiary.
Robert Hamilton, son-in-law of James Fergus, the veteran Montanan living in Fergus county, reports the ill Fergus is gradually sinking and may not live many days.
