Prohibition era debate shifts as Senate committee revises the food bill provisions. Lawmakers clash over enforcement, taxation, and regulatory powers while party leaders push for a quicker vote.
Senate agriculture committee rewrites the war food control bill to expand government power. A new bone dry prohibition would halt intoxicating beverage manufacture, authorize the president to permit wine making and commandeer spirits, factories, packing houses, oil wells, and mines, regulate wages, and requisition supplies for the army and navy with arbitration for wage disputes.

The destroyer Shaw completed a record Pacific to Atlantic coast run of about 5858 miles in 5 days 10 hours 20 minutes and set a new Panama Canal passage record of 5 hours 45 minutes. The keel is laid for February 1916. Washington plans to insure soldiers lives during the war will be discussed July 2 at a conference of life insurance company presidents with Secretary McAdoo. Invitations were sent by the treasury department.
