Bryan Declines Chairmanship in Party Platform Move
Baltimore June 26 The resolutions committee offered the chair to W Z Bryan who declined. A committee of Senators Raynor Maryland O Gorman New York and Culberson Texas was appointed to press his service. Bryan arrived at 10 40 amid discussion of a progressive platform and the timing of presenting the platform to the convention. He urged harmony and warned against a minority report but reserved right to oppose the platform if needed. The rules committee then decided to defer platform presentation until after the nomination. A separate measure recognized the authority of a unit convention and delegates from Ohio fought against binding instructions, while a substitute was defeated and a minority report planned by Henry of Texas. The committee finally formed a three member minority report report to be submitted with Bryan presenting the minority view. The convention adjourned.
