Franchise Assessments Move to Settle Utility Tax Rates
The board of equalization will meet next month to decide protests over higher franchise assessments for public utility companies in Butte and county. Rail and electric lines, water and telephone franchises are slated for dramatic increases, despite prior cuts. The board includes county commissioners and mayoral appointees, with appeals possible to courts. The city collects royalties and gross receipts from the utilities, funding city revenue.
