County complaints on jail overcrowding and improper arrests
The county quarter and acting county physician complained yesterday to county commissioners about many men recently sent to the county jail by city police with few or no charges. The auditor cited drunks as frequent inmates and a man who repeatedly asked about the county hospital while in custody. The jail wagon carried him to the county jail where he was left without a charge. The acting physician urged fewer trips to treat city drunks who end up in jail. Commissioners said the county is being overburdened and overcrowded. Assistant County Attorney Lamb advised directing sheriffs to detain only with a complaint or charge or for home arrest if no charge exists. He called it an outrage to jail a man without charge.
